Why do fans confuse “slickness” with pot shot evasive maneuvers?

    A bit subjective innit..

A “slick” fighter is both offensively and defensively sound. They can evade multiple attacks in defensive combinations.

Fans need to realize that loose boxing is reflexive to sparring tricks, to play. Just because BJS can dip a shot from Lemieux and look out isn’t “slick” at all. That’s just a form of showboating. I’d say slick is a fighter who moves upper torso. We seen highlights of Canelo doing slick defensive maneuvers against elites. Who has Andrade or BJS fought to make them “slick?”

Lara wasn’t “slick.” That’s just a style of constant mobility baiting a ring closer to get your shots off. Judges can easily gauge that by seeing what and where shots are landing.

They say Plant is “slick.” But against who?! If you were to tell Linares to play with a green prospect who’s C level you’d see amazing things. Everyone knows I’m a fan of Josh Kelly because he dares unnecessary tricks as was Prince Hamed. Is that “slick?”

If you’re doing tricks against elites that’s “slick.” Seen Canelo do things against Jacobs and Smith, effortlessly, having fun. Is that slick because it’s against elites? Or we just going to call general style movers “slick.” That could be easily interpreted as guys whom don’t want to engage and on the flee. I seen Canelo do rope a dope or play with GGG on the ropes... is that slick? Ali did it. Fury does it.

With Loma going the first 6 rounds not getting tagged too badly by Lopez is considered slick?

I think “slickness” is being overused with lack adversity.

For example, Berlanga isn’t choosing to be “slick.”

Slick is evasiveness and being able to use the ring while still demonstrating ring generalship. Slick fighters generally have better feet, stamina, and reflexes than the average fighter. Fighters who can't use the ring are the one who should be shamed.

Fighters have the right and should use every attribute they have against a boxer. If a boxer is mobile and the other one isn't, it's his responsibility to use that to his advantage.

And Lara is the epitome of slickness. But he hasn't been slick in all fights. Against Angulo, he was slick. Picking his spots, fighting his fight on his own terms and controlling the pace. Against Canelo he was simply trying to survive. That's the difference.

To me slick is a fighter that can stand in front of his opponent and make them miss. Like a Whitaker. Slipping punches = Slick.

                I agree

Also I would say Andrade and bjs etc are more runners than slick

It's a combination of devensive evasiveness and / or speed and accuracy in attack combined with naturally fluent movement that makes efficient use of space and momentum. Pernell Whitaker and Floyd Mayweather are obviously good examples of being defensively slick but I think you can also be slick offensively as well, good examples of this are Roman Gonzalez and Sugar Ray Leonard.

                    Purely subjective.

One group sees running and clinching to survive as slick.

It's also based on race. If he's white and does the same thing, you can be sure it's not seen as slick.
