This was a sad fight. Canelo is great don't get me wrong, but it also exemplified everything wrong with British boxing and why our fighters only make true elite/p4p level once a decade if we are lucky.
Smith is a fighter who has had every advantage given to him his entire career and has been matched purposefully to ensure a 100% record and milk as much money and hype out of his career as possible.
He lost to John Ryder who has lost to a few good domestic level fighters.
He was slow and cumbersome tonight and for a man of his size had nothing that could even slow Canelo let alone hurt him. He wasn't even good enough to execute his game plan if running away properly.
This is a man who has been billed his entire career as one of the best British fighters around. The real deal.

British boxing is and always will be about creating an illusion of greatness to sell a product. We have a much smaller pool of talent and in order to maximise profits we rely on smoke and mirrors to churn out hype job after hype job.
It isn't about producing the best fighters possible, it's about milking a product/fighter for all his worth before he gets exposed and people realise it's all hype.
The reality is that one of the best we have to offer was scared to really even jab tonight. He got bullied and battered by a man he dwarfed in humiliating fashion, because the reality is, he isn't a fraction of the fighter he has been billed as his entire career. How can world champion at larger weight not even believe himself to win.
If this is a sport and we want to produce top talents then we need to stop caring about losing and match fighters with potential with tougher tests from much earlier on.
