Yes Callum Smith may have been a good matchup for Canelo style wise but he was still an undefeated champ who is objectively a top 3 guy in the weightclass. And as I remember Canelo was supposed to fight BJS and then he wanted to fight Plant both "slick" fighters. The elite P4P fighters are able to make top level opponents look bad and nullify them. Smith was trying but most of his power shots were missing/blocked and even the ones that he landed Canelo rolled with.
The problem for Canelo opponents is that if you try to to just jab and move and fight negatively you will probably lose a decision or like Kovalev get KO'd late. If you try to brawl or get super aggressive you play to his strengths as a counterpuncher and combination puncher. Plant and BJS would both lose because of their lack of power and wouldn't anything meaningful against Canelo. And big punchers like Benavidez and Beterbiev could be dangerous but Canelo is considerably faster than both and has amazing upper body movement.
