Folks belts/titles are not any fighter's PERSONAL property... there is always that pesky thing called MANDATORY defense even if you think the challenger/s do not stand a chance.

The fight game is full of challengers who would never get a sniff at a title shot were is not for their mandatory status. Think Spence etc etc

They have families to feed too plus the champ gets the chance to make an "easy" (maybe) defence in a stay busy fight. Win win.
