Is there any justification for Pernell being great in any weight class?

It's time we speak the truth about Pernell Whitaker. A mildly entertaining feather-fisted fighter who gets praised for absolutely no reason except for being flashy in youtube highlights.

Great defensive boxer no doubt, but that is only half of what makes a great fighter, correct?

Let's take a look at his most notable bouts

Julio Cesar Chavez - First off. Let's laugh at this. An aging JCC who has done absolutely NOTHING at welterweight is supposed to be one of his best victories. Blasphemy. This fight was wack as neither fighter was really doing anything, and while Pernell definitely did more to get the nod, it speaks volumes about how weak he was. Oscar, the dude who beats the **** out of Pernell, shows you how to convincingly beat JCC.

Oscar De La Hoya - Another fight where Sweet Pee stans claim was robbery. Nuts. A fight where Pernell looks slick and great in his defense, but can't connect Oscar with any clean shots. Even Trinidad (who lost to Oscar too) put the pressure on Oscar the whole fight and landed him at times. Great victory for Golden Boy. Even greater loss for Sweet Pee.

Felix Trinidad - classic fight and my favorite Pernell fight. He gets absolutely demolished by a boxer worth a damn. "Greatest defensive boxer" my ass. Who the **** gets clocked by Trinidad like that?

These are by far his biggest names and he just falls woefully short. I won't even discuss the actual robberies like Wilfredo I and II.

Thankfully nobody respected Sweet Pee in his time and he benefits from being in one of the weakest eras at the time, as he was no better than someone like Angel Manfredy.

    Absolutely laughable.

Buddy McGirt? Azumah Nelson? Jose Luis Ramirez? You’ve heard of those guys right?

You can apparently become undisputed champion without being “great” in that weight class. Who knew...

Another moron for the ignore list... don’t expect another reply.

Pernell who was obviously a defensive wizard, doesn't get enough credit for how dynamic he was.

He was even more dynamic than Floyd Mayweather, another defensive genius who was more of a full welterweight, yet i have a hard time picturing Floyd do some of the things Whitaker did.

i.e Whitaker scored a KnockDown on Delahoya, and scored a possibly needed stoppage on Hurtado in a fight he might have been losing. These are things Floyd just wouldn't do or can't do if in a similar situation.

Surprisingly, Pernell was bullying Chavez at times. Chavez actually seemed to wince at some of the body shots Pernell landed on him.

Pernell was already showing signs of getting old a year before the Delahoya fight when he fought Wilfredo Rivera the first time.
