I spoke with the undefeated Dmitriy "Star of David" Salita recently at a press conference for his upcoming bout with Francisco Campos. Salita is regaining momentum following a rough period in the last nine months. After going down twice in the first round against Ramon Montano and once more against Robert Frankel, Salita rebounded with a dominant sixth round TKO over Shad Howard.
With all of his distractions behind him now, Salita looks to make his mark on the sport. Salita's ***ish faith and New York flare make him a charismatic attraction in the Big Apple. With an impressive amateur background and a sterling record, "The Star of David" shines brightly as a top attraction in Lou Dibella's seemingly unending roster of New York pugs.
Ryan ********: Do you know anything about your next opponent, Francisco Campos?
Dmitriy Salita: Yes, I know that he's a tough guy. He's fought many world champions and top guys and he's going to bring a good fight. But I expect to put on a great show and take care of business in spectacular fashion.
********: You're well along in your career right now. Is there any time table for when you are going to step up in opposition?
Salita: Yeah, I'm hoping to fight for a world title by the beginning of next year. The WBA elimination bout is going to take place September 2, and I'm waiting to see who the winner will be.
********: If you had your choice of opposition, who would it be?
Salita: I want to fight the WBA Junior Welterweight champion.
********: You're about a month away from your next fight. What stage of training are you in right now?
Salita: I'm in very good shape because I haven't taken much time off since my last fight. This is really a quick turn around, one after the other. I'm very good, I'm going to go away to camp and put the finishing touches on my training and I'm going to be OK.
********: Who have you been sparring with in preparation of your upcoming fight?
Salita: We haven't really began our tough sparring yet. When we go to camp, we're going to have James Moore, John Duddy, amongst other guys that I'm going to train with at Gleason's.
********: During the 1920's and 30's, when ***s were a dominant force in the sport, they gained popularity with ethnic rivalries with Irish and Italian fighters. Do you think you and other ***ish fighters can help reignite a boxing demographic that hasn't had a hero since the days of Leonard and Ross?
Salita: Boxing's an ethnic sport so rivalries fuel interest in boxing. I actually hope John (Duddy) and I in the future would be able to fight on the same card. I think that would be tremendous for New York City and for two communities, that would be great.
********: ***ish fighters were a dominant force early last century. Do you draw any inspiration from the rich heritage of ***ish boxing?
Salita: Yeah, absolutely. At one point in time boxing was a ***ish sport. I've read many books on it, I'm interested in the history. Actually, the most dominant group in boxing were the ***s, in the 1920's and the 1930's. So I hope to follow in their footsteps and be a world champion.
********: Of all of the great ***ish fighters in the history of boxing, which is your favorite?
Salita: My favorite is Barney Ross.
********: Do you have anything you would like to say to boxing fans around the world?
Salita: I want to thank all my fans and I look forward to being a world champ and to being a top fighter in the near future.
