By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It's election season. And after many years in which a few names clearly separated from the pack of "modern" fighters angling for International Boxing Hall of Fame induction, we've got ourselves a horse race. In fact, each of the first-time candidates on the ballot have cases to make it to the Class of 2021. Three of the fighters on the ballot will be...

Who knows how much more Miguel Cotto could've accomplished if he hadn't run into the illegal fists of Antonio Margarito, who also ruined the undefeated record of Kermit Cintron as well. Margarito cheated against 3 Puerto Ricans after running into Daniel Santos 2X, Kermit Cintron 2X, and Miguel Cotto 2X. Cotto was a great fighter, who would've been even greater if those loaded fists of Margarito hadn't damaged him psychologically. The plaster of Paris found in Margarito hand wraps were like getting hit with rocks. Those kinds of blows to the head leave lingering damage, weakening one's recuperative powers.

All of the fighters nominated for the International Boxing Hall of Fame, are worthy of induction. They've all shed their blood, sweat, and tears, and have stellar careers in professional boxing. It's just a question of when they will be inducted, but they will be inducted at one point or another. I salute each, and everyone of them for their sacrifices, they've earned their places in history.

Imo it's a disgrace that James Toney, a proven multitime drug cheat, irrespective of boxing skill, would be voted in.

But that's just another example of the institutionalised acceptance of drug use in professional boxing.

Lyle, nobody sent you hate mail for suggesting that Gatti didn't deserve to be in, they did it because you made extremely bad taste jokes about the circumstances of his untimely death.

Not saying that the choices are wrong or bad...but wouldn't it be nice to save one of those 5 votes for a holdover who is deserving? And instead of listing titles, how about listing how long they were on the p4p list or how long they were the top dog in their division? Belts are useless. Cotto made a career of fighting for vacant titles. At what weight was he ever considered the best in class? At 140 (vacant belt), Kostya and Mayweather (not a bad pair)would have been rated higher. At 147 (vacant title) Margo, May, Williams were the class. At 154, (Cotto beat the dreaded Yuri Foreman), a prime Martinez, Williams, Pac, May, Trout beat him, and at 160 there were a least a half dozen fighters who would have beaten him. In other words, belts are useless measure of 'greatness'. It is who you beat, when you beat them, and how you beat them.
