Comments Thread For: Santa Cruz: I Wanted Davis Fight Because People Said I Was Scared, Always Getting Tune-Ups

SAN ANTONIO Leo Santa Cruz got sick of it. That is his honest explanation for why he was so aggressive about getting Gervonta Davis to fight him. The four-division champion grew tired of boxing fans questioning his heart and criticizing his overall level of opposition after avenging his lone loss to Carl Frampton in January 2017.

Doesn't erase the fact that he and Frampton were too scared to fight Rigo. He is taking this because his career is winding down and wants to get the biggest paydays he can get.

Still boggles my mind that this is a PPV fight.

Agreed, and he also should have faced Gary Russell Jr. by now since both have been in and around the same division with the same promoter for years.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't blame any fighter for getting the biggest paydays they can get, however I have to say that this reminds me of when Amir Khan moved up to face Canelo Alvarez. Was he daring to be great? You could say that, and you could also say that the fight was essentially a highly-paid suicide mission.

Hopefully the fight will be competitive but I could see it ending badly for Santa Cruz. I'm glad it's at least taking place at 130 though because 135 would be way worse.

Considering Leo's personality I think he might be daring to be great. But, in the All Access he asked his dad if he thinks he can beat Gervonta, and his dad said "you'll have to box him". Honestly Leo doesn't sound very confident to me so it might just be that cash-out fight for him. We'll see on Saturday!

lol Leo keeping it real. I mean, who has he faced besides Frampton and Mares? Not that Tank's bum ass record is any better, but both are the best each have faced.

When I think about the matchup, I see a relatively light hitting (at 130) volume guy in Leo Santa Cruz vs an explosive, destructive puncher in Tank Davis who probably belongs at 135.

LSC isn't a pure boxer so he will have to put himself in harm's way to apply pressure. That's great if he has the power to hurt Tank but I'm not sure he does. Lastly, LSC's height actually makes him a huge target in my view.

He hasnt had high volume since his days in 122 lbs (a long time ago). This is a mismatch. there's no way lsc can win. pointless match.

Is GRJ really that relevant anymore? The man fights once a year maybe. Unless he is going up against the absolute best in that fight (which he is not) you cannot blame Leo or anyone else for not fighting Gary. Gary just is not active enough to matter anymore.
