Comments Thread For: Subriel Matias Breaks Down, Drops, Stops Malik Hawkins

Subriel Matias moved past his worst night at the office by delivering arguably the best performance of his young career. The hard-hitting junior welterweight from Fajardo, Puerto Rico broke down previously unbeaten Malik Iceman' Hawkins en route to a 7th round stoppage win Saturday evening from a crowdless Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. Matias scored the bout's lone knockdown in round six, with the ringside doctor advising referee Johnnie Callis that Hawkins was no longer able to continue 0:01 of round seven.

This is one of those fights where you knew when it was signed, the unbeaten fighter was going to get beatdown and lose that zero, based on Malik not being physically strong enough or having enough firepower to keep Matias honest. Malik fought hard and with all he had, but he wasn't going to keep Matias off of him in the long run. With all that Malik has gone through, I hope he can have better things in his life happen since it has been hard for him.

Hawkins got what he had coming to him for all that talk before fight. Matias hasn't been the same since the Dadashev fight and it showed some in his first loss. He seems to be moving past that little by little, and hopefully this performance is the restart of his once-promising career.

Wtf were Hawkins handlers thinking matching him v. matias this early in his career. Probably ruined him now.

                Matias is a PROBLEM, still.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about where his head was in each of his fights since Dadashev. I'm sure it'll live with him, understandably, but I feel more confident in his trajectory.

Dropping his hands was silly. Probably/maybe more him playing his opponent - unconcerned. Chalk it up to Subriel trying to prove himself to his self.

Some of us knew he was coming to win and would, but we can't neglect the narrative. SHO billed him as an opponent, against "another undefeated guy" and the favorite/a Mayweather/Gervonta affiliate and stablemate.

Already ranked within the particularly STACKED top 10, of a deep 15-20 @ 140, Matias will be champ sooner than later.
He isn't spectacular under certain light, but he doesn't have to be. He's very good and almost so old school with what talents set him apart - he is almost always coming forward, hits HARD, but just as important as anything else, if not more than everything else, he has A SOLID CHIN.

He'll continue to win, maybe lose some, but I can't imagine what he does well not getting him to a belt(s).

Are we over the idea of a loss, or a few, disinteresting us/diminishing the people who fight for a living shiii?
We, as in whoever, but not me.

Great to see Matias bounce back from his first Lose

As for Hawkins, yeah I don't know who the hell told him it was a good idea to take this fight, clearly wasn't ready for a step up even after this last fight

Hawkins opened at a crazy -600 favorite earlier in the week but the odds werw all the way down to Matias +140 tonight to win straight up.
