Comments Thread For: Povetkin vs. Whyte: What About The Winner?

By Tris Dixon - There's been debate over whether Dillian Whyte will be fit to face Alexander Povetkin on the scheduled rematch date of November 21. Whyte was dramatically knocked out by the Russian in round five in a fight he was winning, having floored the visitor to Matchroom's Fight Camp twice in round four. But the 40-year-old veteran turned things around with a...

I'm all for preventative and precautionary guidelines protecting fighters - but, there is a danger of over-regulation which can have the unintended consequence of diluting the essence of the sport.

We have already seen rounds reduced to 12 from 15 for championship bouts, increased padding within gloves for heavier fighters, premature stoppages and so on.

At some point the boxing community needs to accept that boxing is a rough, tough, dangerous sport, whose main attraction is some parts witnessing great skill, but more so it is the 'wars' and KO's that attract the fans.

Fighters make a choice to get in the ring and fight. Let's not tinker anymore with what goes on in the ring but concentrate more on cleaning up the sport, streamlining and unifying the sanctioning bodies into one - then and only then will the administrators have the power to enforce protective guidelines on a fighter.

Neither guy is a threat. Whyte especially.

There is no need of over protection.
In this particular case, they are both fine. Their fight wasn't a war like Whyte vs Chisora and neither Whyte nor Povetkin took much punishment in the fight.
They only had their moments in the fight.

Robert Smith, general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, said ".... Povetkin is licensed by the Russian federation but the Board issues a permit to visiting fighters allowing them to box. We will receive new medicals sent over to us and if we need anything else we will request it. .....”

Yeah sure. Like asking the fox if the latch to the chicken coop is secure.

Great article. Such a reminder of how serious this sport is. I remember back in my am days the lack of understanding was such, wed have a fight and be training the next day. Admittedly we had headgear etc but but with increased understanding of head injuries there needs to be better control.

It's only happening again because of Hearn's greed and arrogance. The winner should not automatically be reinstated as the WBC mandatory anyway? You can't lose the mandatory position and then 'win it back'.

Well I think Whyte would win it back because Povetkin is now interim champion which puts you in mandatory position and that “title” will be on the line.

I don’t know if that should be the case because he is at number five in the rankings and he will leapfrog everybody back to number one if he wins.

But that seems to be the case anyway.

This is why I think rematch clause should only exist for real title fights or not at all. If two fighters agree to rematch for an interim title after the fact, then fair enough, but I don’t think there should be a rematch clause in place before the first fight for mandatory position fights.
