  • Comments Thread For: Jermall Charlo Trainer: People Are Going to Make Excuses For Derevyanchenko

Trainer Ronnie Shields isn't too concerned about how his charge, Jermall Charlo, is perceived in some corners of the boxing universe. The Houston-based middleweight titleholder is gearing up for his highly-anticipated Sept. 26 Showtime pay-per-view matchup against the Ukraine's Sergiy Derevyanchenko, in a fight that many consider to be Charlo's biggest test to date. (Also featured on the card, scheduled to take place in a closed-environment at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., is Charlo's younger twin, Jermell, who will face Jeison Rosario in a junior middleweight unification bout).

This I agree with. Both these guys have controversial wins on their resume. Whoever loses a bunch of excuses will be made for actually. But more for Derevyanchenko, it could be his 3rd or 4th loss depending who you talk too.

I just want Charlo to keep that same energy he has for Canelo, for Andrade. Even moreso cause he won't be fighting for a while.

Just do you Jermall and keep banking them $$$.

          Haters will hate.

          Their problem.Not yours.

Anyone know if showtime has set the cost of this ppv yet? Hopefully somewhere in the ballpark of $50,doubt it though.

How about Andrade? Both Canelo and Charlo have avoided Andrade.

I’m picking Derev here. Guys had super close fights with Jacobs and G, while Charlo hasn’t fought anyone at 160 and picked his belt out of the trash.

Banana’s got a good chance against the crying Charlo too.

"Trying to please critics, says Shields, is a zero-sum game."

                  Very true.

                  "He doesn’t choose his opponents."

So who chooses your opponents if you are your own promoter through lion's only? Seems to me like an excuse or bad business. If you cannot get the top dog in the division then clear it out by defeating the other contenders this way you make yourself the clear cut choice for #1 contender.

Andrade ducked Charlo years back! Hindsight is 20/20!
