Maskaev has a year to defend his title against a mandatory challenger thus leaving plenty of time for a unification bout.

Not according to the WBC, and it's their belt. Toney was to get a rematch with Rahman immediatly after the Maskaev bout. There was almost a lawsuit from Maskaev because Toney was about to get the rematch shot originally, and Rappaport pulled the suit with the promise to the WBC that Toney would fight the winner of his bout with Rahman, which the WBC ordered and Sunday the WBC said that Maskaev MUST fight the winner of Peter-Toney next.

Unless there is some step aside money paid to the proper parties, the promoters of Peter and Toney are sure to start a lawsuit, if the WBC does not strip him.

the winner or toney/peter is not gonna want to fight again until early next year anyways. why would it be such a big deal to let maskaev fight in november and the winner of peter/toney could fight him in feb/mar of next year. they may end up waiting a month longer than what they would have had to wait anyhow. maskaev is getting old fast, he should be jumping at the chance to get back in the gym and fight in 3 months instead of having a long layoff and fighting next year.

problem here is, toney and peter both know that klitschko will beat maskaev, they also know that they stand little chance of beating wlad and a very good chances of beating oleg.

they dont want to let unification happen for the simple reason that they wont be able to beat the new unified champion and will therefore be title-less til they can land a shot against valuev or lyko.

The winner of Toney/Peter would need some rest time after their fight and Maskaev could possibly be ready to go late this year so I can not see why a unification bout can be signed.

Goddam, how pathetic. For once two title holders wanted to unify and we already had a controversy.
