Comments Thread For: Povetkin Focused on Whyte Rematch, Rejects Talk of 'Lucky Punch'

Former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin held a press conference in Russia to discuss his brutal knockout victory over Dillian Whyte. Last Saturday night at Matchroom's Fight Camp in Brentwood, Povetkin was behind on points and went down twice in the fourth, but he landed a spectacular uppercut in the fifth to knock Whyte out cold.

No argument there. There was nothing lucky about it. And I hope Whyte will see the reason for this loss as a hole in his defense and overall preparedness to fight at this level. If he doesn't take a self-critical view, it could end in another loss from which it will be much harder to recover. When an Olympic gold medalist and one of the top fighters in the world, even aging, knocks out a fighter who had a bit over 30 fights - you need to be deluded to talk about luck. Povetkin deserves all the credit for this win, Whyte has got plenty of home work to do and I think its a mistake to rush into a rematch.

Nothing lucky about that. That was a textbook set-up.

It’s an insult if anyone calls this a lucky punch. Even when he was KD he wasn’t gone or done.

Posters really need to read the article it’s boxing business 101 even know it rarely happens on here .

Povetkin was plotting the punch from the opening bell, prior to the knockout he was inching closer that’s why you don’t let danger fighters coast you press them when you get multiple knockdowns ,Whyte looked like he was sleep walking in round 5 then went to sleep .

                  Well said both of you.

Insulting to intelligence and the fighter and his effort to call it luck.

And wise of Povetkin to focus on the rematch.

This a great assessment of the fight. Povetkin is a skilled fighter and has slowed quite a bit with age but a very technically sound fighter altogether. He was setting the uppercut up from round one with the left hook body shots and faked the hook for the uppercut.

Whyte dropped the ball in round 4 by not swarming him for the finish.
