  • Comments Thread For: Shawn Porter: I Never Heard Of Formella Before Fight Was Scheduled

Shawn Porter was as unfamiliar with Sebastian Formella until recently as a lot of boxing fans who will tune in to watch their fight Saturday night. In fact, the former IBF/WBC welterweight champion wasn't aware that the unbeaten German contender existed until he was presented as a potential opponent. Porter since has studied plenty of Formella's film in preparation for their 12-round, 147-pound IBF/WBC elimination match, which will headline FOX's telecast Saturday night from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

She doesn't watch boxing as far as I know.

Me? I say Porter has an easy night UNLESS he doesn't bring the linebacker. If he tries to fight like Floyd like he did against Ugas, 'Man Bun' will have a chance to make it close when he shouldn't.

Porter's right that 'Man Bun' likes distance, but he's a thrower. He's not going to pot shot especially against a top level where he's got something to prove.

Summary: Porter SHOULD make easy work of the guy, mid round stoppage. But that depends on if he brings the linebacker or not, because without that, he sucks.

And Formella has over 150 amateur fights so it's not like he'll be a straight up soft touch. He has footwork, he's not afraid to throw and he can go to war. He's accurate with a decent (not great) jab. He kind of reminds me of a less slappy version of Joe Calslappy, but that's not really fair either.

If you do watch the fight, be on the look out for Formella's check hook. I've seen him land it from pretty smart angles in the phone booth. Porter will have to have the same workrate he had against Spence and I'm not sure he will think he needs to do that. But if he doesn't do that, like I said, I think Formella takes him the distance. Porter has to get this guy out of there in 6 rounds with just straight up linebacker pressure.

I actually considered putting some bets in on this. Even the bookies think it's HIGHLY likely to go the distance or a Porter stoppage, so if there was ever a time to bet on long odds this is it.

I actually just noticed that he's promoted by the same guy that promotes Dimitrenko. And that promoter's roster doesn't seem to have a lot of losses. Hmm

Porter better not screw this up.
An upset would just ruin the rankings and and plans of people.

That's kind of unfair. I mean we do need some fresh blood injected at welterweight. Plus 'Man Bun' is not PBC, which means there'd be no excuse for Crawford not to fight him should he happen to upset Porter. Then maybe the IBO will be regarded at welter like it's regarded at heavy.

We could be looking at another Darnell Boone/Clay Collard/Jeff Horn type story - huge underdogs getting major upsets.

I mean it really does depend on Porter. I actually put a bit of money on 'Man Bun' getting a points decision - total long odds, just in case he decides he wants to shock the world. Just in case. I seriously don't think he will - but that Ugas fight has me concerned about Porter showing up when he thinks it's a soft touch.
