  • Comments Thread For: Braekhus: It's A Big Deal To Break Joe Louis' Record For Consecutive Title Defenses

The longest-reigning champion in all of boxing can make more history Saturday night. If Cecilia Braekhus beats Jessica McCaskill, she'll have made the 26th consecutive defenses of the WBA and WBC welterweight titles she won in March 2009. By doing so, she'd surpass Joe Louis' 72-year-old record of 25 straight championship defenses in the same weight class.

Breaking Joe Louis' record by fighting someone with 8 wins. Real impressive.

Let's not compare the records from men's boxing with those for women. The depth of talent and the level of competition are obviously vastly different.

In no way will this be a comparable accomplishment.

There's only 58 fighters in the entire world in that division. Achievements in women's boxing just aren't a big deal, because there isn't much competition.

              Cecelia Braekhus > Joe Louis

In other sporting news, Wii Sports Tennis legend Joe Blow eclipsed Roger Federer's Men's Grand Slam title record with 21 world championship wins.

Rest easy Joe, your record still stands. No matter how many defenses she makes.

She won't be breaking his record but of course has set the record in womens boxing already and will extend it if she gets past McCaskill tomorrow. She just got a bit carried away that's all.
