Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez: August 21 Will Be The Start, Or The End, Of Something Very Beautiful

Former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is only a few weeks away from his return to boxing after six years of being retired from the sport. Martinez was last seen in the ring back in June of 2014, when he was stopped by Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Good for him. I like his mentality, but I wonder how many camps he has left in him at this stage. Prepping for fighters like Eubank Jr and the Charlos would be a huge challenge for a 45 year old. His skill level, even in his prime wasn't enough to dominate these guys.

His skill level in his prime wasn't enough to dominate the likes of Charlo and Eubank Jr ? In his prime he had the catlike reflexes and mastery of distance that with either he could just pot shot at distance and not get touched (and if he had to go to war he could do that too - eg no choice but to do that with Williams).

But with no knees and dulled reflexes, he's lost what made him so good - easy fodder now for anyone looking for his name on their resume.

Prime Martinez against Eubank Jr. it will be the same as the George Groves fight. Don't forget what he did to Kelly Pavlik.

          Charlo...

I hope that this doesn't end badly for Martinez who seems like a good guy. But judging by the Cotto fight several yrs ago, it's not likely to turn out very well for him.

His fight against Pavlik was a classic. Stay retired Champ!

Let's just see what happens. People love to bi-tch and moan too much. I'll watch just to see what his knees look like. If his legs are done, that'll tell me everything I need to know.

He would be better off starting wheelchair boxing for cripples. I'd definitely watch. I don't see why wheelchair sports should stop at tennis and basketball. Sergio could be the first cripple in the Wheelchair Boxing Hall of Fame just to get the ball rolling on what will be the world's fastest growing sport.
