Comments Thread For: Whyte: I'm Expecting Best Povetkin In Long Time; He Knows What's At Stake

Alexander Povetkin is 40 years old and has gone 1-1-1 in his past three fights. Dillian Whyte still considers the former WBA heavyweight champion a very dangerous opponent. Whyte figures Povetkin realizes their fight for Whyte's WBC interim championship is essentially his last chance to become a two-time champion and make substantially more money before he retires.

The best prepared Povetkin is the one who fought AJ when he had that A list of sparring partners like Sirenko and DDD to really push him ,will he have that again with guys like that among others ?

Probably not but he’s going to be injury free and sharp as he can be which will make it a nail biter unless Whyte catches him early like Hunter and rattles him ,otherwise this is going to be a war from start to finish ,not everyone is AJ who can control from long distance against Povetkin who has a habit making grueling fights which is why his sole loses were to long range power punchers Klitschko and Joshua.

Good observations! Whyte isn't a particularly fast starter, or ever really looks like he has great stamina. If it settles into an exchange of skill then povetkin has an excellent chance; if he still has any ambition left?

I don't like Whyte and I hope Povetkin wins, but I kind of doubt it. Povetkin's slow and flat flooted now, which isn't a good combo on a guy without much reach. Whyte isn't a boxing genius but he has a long, hard jab and he's shown that he's not too shy to win fights from the outside off the back foot. Of course, he can brawl as well and any kind of exchange he gets caught up in could just as easily go his way rather than Povetkin's. That said every time I've picked against Povetkin he's surprised me to at least some degree so who knows, maybe he'll do me a favour this time.

I really have no rooting interest in this one. I just want it to be a hard fought slug fest to put heavyweight boxing back on the map after all this time off. this fight has fight of the year potential.

Even old Povetkin can take this guy out.

I think Whyte being 245 plus has good stamina because he’s a volume puncher, you see him gas towards the end of fights because he maintained high punch volume . He needs to be near the 245 mark to be his best all around ,he has weighed nearer to 260 in some recent fights but that’s playing with fire if the fight goes long because he relies on volume and wearing guys down to land that huge left hook .

I see it as a slight edge to Whyte he sounds like he’s been studying Povetkin hard in the Kevin Iole interview and knows he cannot afford to lose because he won’t see another title shot in years unless AJ is feeling generous down the line Povetkin is a tough guy to handle ,should be a good one . I don’t look at age ,you go by performance, both are still dangerous on any given night you don’t know who shows up with the COVID situation either because it is effecting training camps ,sparring partners etc...

Povetkin is also the second guy Whyte is fighting after AJ defeated them , Parker was the other so you know there’s a competitive thing in Whytes head .
