  • Comments Thread For: Verdejo Wants To Return By Year's End, Eager For Title Fight

Puerto Rican lightweight contender Felix "El Diamante" Verdejo is very motivated to fight again before the year is over. After his impressive victory this past Thursday, Verdejo is hoping to get a bigger opportunity in his next fight - and if a world title opportunity appears, he will not think twice about accepting it.

My fellow Boricua needs to dramatically step up his competition before he's worthy of a title shot.

He did beat Bryan Vasquez who is a solid fighter but yeah he needs to slow his horses. Would love to see him fight vs someone like Raymundo Beltran first before he fights anyone in the top 10

I disagree, I think he's ready for top 10, maybe not top 3. Even though his last opponent was mediocre it's the eye test that I'm focusing on. His punches were tighter, sharper and snappy. Speed was above average, and all that mixed together improved his punching power. Jab was stiff, quick and snappy, more like a power jab. He stood tall and used his length and never leaned forward to reduce his length. Body looks vastly improved. Defense looks like it still needs some work, he got caught with a few rights. Culmination of his last couple of fights, and the improvement is evident. Top 3 not yet, but top 10, I think he'll handle them.

Verdejo should try to fight Haney this fall because everyone else at 135 is already committed to a fight

I agree with pretty much everything you said except him being ready for top 10 most I think would beat him . He can probably beat 1 or 2 of them . That's why I rather him take his time and keep improving before he makes that jump . I do want to see him up his competition I think Raymundo Beltran would be a perfect step up .

Like others here have said, Verdejo needs to just take his time. This win doesn't particularly suggest he'll be ready for a title shot anytime soon.

He needs to fight a top 10 first, them go to a title fight.

The problem is Verdejo is no longer a prospect. He was top notch, and ready for a title before he started partying and lost focus. Now that he is refocused, in a new gym and vastly improved we shouldn't be talking about small steps. He looks better than he did before he lost his way. He's ready.
