It's perfect the way he describes it.

You're not "fighting" (i.e. it's not slugging), you're trying to get to a weakness while staying safe (i.e. hit and not be hit). But you have to risk it.

Now it's clear where Manny went wrong. He wouldn't risk it, because he didn't know what the weakness was. That's why Roach was so damn disappointed.
