Where has Victor Ortiz gone wrong?

A few years ago I would of confidently said that he was on his way to superstardom and could of easily been one of the best of his time. Then all of a sudden he kinda just almost.... quit. I mean some of his losses to me it looks like he literally just quit for no real reason. The Maidana fight for example, that was an exciting fight with lots of early knockdowns then out of nowhere it seemed like it was over for no real reason other the Ortiz almost with a "Cba" attitude about the fight.

    Thoughts?

Just generally speaking, I think every boxer needs someone in their corner, and Ortiz has never really had that, for whatever reason

Ortiz was really good boxer with a lot of skills, but success came when he was young and with the wrong corner they don't stress enough for your mind to accept that you need to keep excellence at all times. He's too stubborn for his own good and probably thought he was better than he was at the time, he could have been great but stubbornness got on the way.

If you see Lomachenko, Mayweather, Fury and heck, maybe even Teofimo Lopez, their fathers are in their corner and they make sure that they keep excellence at all times.
I'm not saying that you have too keep your father in your corner to be careful, but it's just harder for outsiders to make you change if you are "that" stubborn.

              Gone wrong?

Never. He's just about in the same tier as Berto.

There are levels to this thing.

The Maidana fight was a hard fight and he did not have the heart to take a beating anymore so he quit.

The Floyd fight i guess gave him enough money to live on for a while.

If you dont have the will to fight on when it gets really tough and you have the money you deem necessary then its not hard to see why he did not go any further. He fought and beat guys until it become to hard for him, at the top level and until he had the money he needed.

Like he said in some interview ”i should not get beat up like this”.

Of course we prefer fighters with the Maidana or Ali or Brandon Rios mentality. But i understand Ortiz he made his money the way he could and then he had enough. It was a job for him, not a calling to be great.
