Comments Thread For: Hearn: Ratings Produced By ESPN/Top Rank Shows Horrible For The Sport

Eddie Hearn thinks the viewership figures from Top Rank's ESPN shows in June are bad for the boxing business overall. The British promoter pointed to the level of fights Top Rank has put together the past three weeks as the primary reason more viewers haven't watched consistently. The first of six Top Rank cards ESPN has aired on weeknights since June 9 from Las Vegas drew the highest viewership, a peak audience of 609,000 during Shakur Stevenson's sixth-round knockout of Felix Caraballo in the main event and an average audience of 397,000.

What was the idea? That we were so desperate for boxing that we'd watch anything? How did that turn out?

This is a 2 week old story. Why is it being published now?

In fact, looking at this story it is a cobbling together of items which were put out over a two week period. How is this journalism?

What exact did you put out Eddie
Why don’t you prove Top Rank wrong instead of just criticizing
Can hardly wait to see the Hearnamaniacs twist this one as a significant statement by their leader Eddie

What a true ******* , criticizing but not doing anything to better it

Some of the responsibility also must fall on fighters 'Ether they want to fight or they don't'. They will still be earning, so it is up to themselves.

          Make the big fights.

How exactly is bad for the sport? We are at least getting fights and they have been far more competitive than Hearn is implying.

Boxing just is a niche sport stateside. Not sure when people will realize this. Only a few fighters truly can do big ratings and TR isn't showcasing any of their top names at the moment.

He’s right. it’s partially self inflicted cuz the cards are generally weak. But major fights take time for prep. But Hearn is a mediocre con man who has put a big target on his back. And when DAZN goes under, the boxing industry is going to pile dirt on matchroom’s casket

It's good that someone's calling out Arum for his garbage shows.

Not that he cares, since he's just lining his pockets. But ESPN fights we're getting are an absolute embarrassment.

He’s not wrong. The optics look terrible for the sport. There’s no f’ing sports on TV and this is all they could manage. He should’ve held this off and put on a bigger card, but we already know Bob is going to milk and stretch things as far as he can to maximize profits.
