    Saul Alvarez Fighting Style

What category does Alvarez boxing fit into?

He’s very versatile from fight to fight and not easy to label unlike most fighters today

Earlier on in his career he wanted to be a counterpuncher—a Mexican Mayweather

1st ggg fight Alvarez went boxer-puncher I think

2nd ggg fight he acted like a pressure fighter

Vs Kova Alvarez was a slugger. He was comfortable with losing rounds and gradually applying pressure until he could land that one big fight ending shot

It’s crazy he can fight any style. There is no range where he can’t fight at. On the outside he’ll outbox you with his counters and if you try to fight him on the inside he’ll brutalize you with hooks to the body. His only glaring weakness is his inability to fight every minute of every round but his defense and control of pace more than makes up for it.

Canelo unfortunately has that classic Mexican physique where a lot of them are short in the legs but their torso’s are the same size as taller guys. I used to make fun saying that his older brothers stole food off his plate, deprived his nutrition and growth in the legs. Sorry to stereotype, but a lot of Mexicans are short and stocky. Kind of like Marquez’s physique where his legs are mad short too and thin toothpicks but their weight is all in the top torso.

What I like about Canelo is that he has an underrated LONG reach. That’s why his high guard is very dangerous because of his counters. Look at the Rhodes fight. His wingspan is like a freaking praying mantis. His physique, torso today, is like a LHW imo, but overall weight to be optimal level he’s like limbo in SMW which is fine for speed and conditioning.

I hope one day the LDBC have Canelo Shrine day in the hood doing Apache dances in the middle of street pretending to be Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves. Beristain would be so proud

I don't like him but yes he is hard to figure out now he is prime.

He learned a lot from the Mayweather fight, but I think he lost the first Golovkin fight.

Canelo is primarily a counter puncher but he's versatile.

Canelo = Marquez (counter punching style) + James Toney (upper body movement) + Chavez Sr (body shots & pressure)

          Nelo is a different breed

I think he is a great boxer that can adapt to any style. He is very solid defensively, has a great variation of punches too. Highly skilled.

At the end of the day, he is a counter-puncher. When he fought Jacobs -- one of his most impressive fights, IMHO -- you had another counter-puncher as well. Both guys had their moments applying pressure - Canelo landing the heavier shots more frequently.

In the 2nd Golovkin fight, I think that his team realized that his punching speed (and superior inside game, including subtle shoulder roll and fast reflexes) would be more effective at disrupting GGG's output than just letting him (GGG) dictate the pace all night long, like the 1st fight went....which, let's be honest, they were lucky to get a Draw though it was still a pretty close fight IMHO.

this and slow feet. He hasn’t been matched with fleet footed guys with beautiful movement since struggling with Lara

oooo so this why fleet footed Mexican fighters are hard to find

Long torso Mexicans So the style evolved to hit the body where there plenty of target

That doesn’t make any sense. There’s no narrative in boxing gyms or trainers that praise Lara’s style against Canelo because there’s thousands of those types in the gyms, so to assume there are many Lara styles is very immature. In fact one could even say that was a PRIME LARA where Canelo had evolved to better adversity. The Canelo today would starch any version of Lara. It’s even more comical that fans think BJS is anything like that PRIME Lara. Even Andrade...these aren’t threats to Canelo imho. Canelo hits VERY HARD. I think the next phase of Canelo are the guys at 168.

And Marquez fought types of Barrera, Khan, Pac, Casamayor. My opinion on Marquez’s or Canelo’s genetic makeup isn’t a deficiency for fighting. And “flat footed” compared to what? Elite level fighting is gauged by compubox and accuracy.

Awesome fighter, with or without the juice, Clen and beef.

I want him to fight Beterbiev though. Just to see how great he really is.
