  • Comments Thread For: Holyfield Explains Why "He's Glad" Mike Tyson Bit Piece of Ear Off

Evander Holyfield was involved in one of the most famous fights in boxing history. In 1996, Holyfield pulled off a big upset when he stopped Mike Tyson in the eleventh round to capture the heavyweight title. Their 1997 rematch generated headlines for decades to come, after Tyson was disqualified in the third round after biting off a piece of Holyfield's ear.

I don't believe nothing these two warriors are saying.. This will not be a sparring session... This will be a war! Tyson will try to avenge his lost with a first round KO and Holyfield won't back down from a scrap.. So it's on!!! Regardless of thier ages.. We will see a personal grudge match turn into a full scaled war! I'm super ready for this one!

pretty sure the ppv numbers he put up prior to that fight vs guys like bowe, Douglas, and Foreman, plus his first win over Tyson would indicate otherwise.

            Excellent reply.

However, I was referring to mass appeal. I believe that Holyfield's popularity skyrocketed after being bitten by Tyson.

In regard to the first Tyson fight, we all know that most people tuned in to watch Tyson knock a theoretically shot Holyfield out cold. The rest is history.

As a matter of fact, that's exactly what I meant by distinguishing the "hardcore boxing aficionados". They knew who Evander was. But common people started knowing him for real just after the bite fight.

Unless you’re really young, many boxing fans will disagree with you. You realize Evander was one of the greatest cruiserweights of all time? He had already fought George Foreman and had his epic fights with Rid**** Bowe. Evander was already a popular fighter well before he fought Tyson. Perhaps you don’t know much about him but he was already a bad man in his own right.

I'm 56, I was there from the beginning of both Tyson and Holyfield's careers. I know all I need to know about Evander, and respect him a lot believe it or not.

I don't agree with you about the level of "popularity" of Holyfield pre-bite fight. Again, he was well known by the experts, of course. But when he fought Foreman, the masses were rooting for the latter to win. Idem for the Tyson fights. And the Bowe fights are mostly remembered for three things: the great round 10 in the first fight; the fan man in the second; Holyfield getting KTFO in the third after having floored Bowe.

This does not detract a bit from Evander's standing as a great fighter. And I know this exactly because I'm not a casual.

I'll admit, however, that I have a soft spot for Tyson, and whenever I can raise some hell around here amidst Tyson haters, I'm all for it, just to have some good laugh
