    It’s true.

All the super welterweights who moved up and took over the division in that era avoided Golovkin when he came on the scene.

HBO tried to make the fight, but Martinez turned it down to face low-risk Martin Murray in a showcase fight instead (and, arguably, still lost).

      Call it what you want.

Martinez was a cripple at that point. He definitely lost that fight and I wish he never came back as a shell of what he was.

Not only did Martinez blatantly duck GGG but so did Canelo for two years, Floyd at 154 and Cotto Quillin and Jacobs also did not step up to dare to be great vs prime GGG either. GGG's duck list is historically illustrious. GGG is without a doubt the most ducked champion in boxing history. Even Tyson Hopkins Hagler Liston Foreman Louis Chavez, Duran were not blatantly ducked like GGG was.

It's BS. GGG was a nobody who had never even fought in America through the majority of Martinez's run. By the time GGG made a name for himself, Martinez had already torn his ACL vs Murray and rehabbing. He took a money fight vs Miguel Cotto, because who wouldn't? Martinez said that he'd fight GGG after he beat Cotto. Unfortunately his knee injury was too much, resulting in his loss to Cotto.

Golovkin made his debut on HBO only 2 weeks before Martinez/Chavez. Even though he fought 7 months later against Murray, you could tell he wasn't the same Martinez during his run from 2010 till 2012. Can't fault him and DiBella for not even entertaining someone as dangerous as Golovkin at that time for what would have been little money, comparatively. Does not feel like it's been 6 years since we last saw him in the ring.

In the leadup to Cotto-Martinez, Loeffler himself said Martinez never turned down that fight and that their schedules hadn't lined up. GGG revisionists try to claim he dominated the division for a decade when in reality he was an afterthought for a large portion of his career. When Martinez was at his peak, GGG was fighting nobodies on the sidelines with little buzz-- and by the time HBO put their hype machine behind him, Martinez was on his way out.

If Bread is referring to the time period just prior to the Cotto fight I have to disagree. He'd have to be crazy to fight Golovkin when his knees were shot and jepordize the Cotto fight that paid a heck of a lot more money.

yea bread bought into most of that Golovkin hype

G had never done anything to justify stepping in front of Martinez money-fight with Cotto... he still hasn't, Cotto would still get that fight today

hard luck for hypekin fans who wanted the world to roll out the red carpet for him
