The writer probably doesn’t understand boxing in terms of being effective. Mike has all the tools and only needs motivation to be great again even if it’s limited time frame , Carl Lewis or Roy Jones would have zero comparison to that of a fast power puncher more skilled then most current heavyweights ,if you put M.Tyson in the ring with say a Joe Parker ,vs Ruiz vs A.J 3 ,who do you believe has the better chance of winning Parker or Ruiz ? I’d say Parker gets blasted in 3 and Ruiz gets it again so it’s Tyson .
Writing this guy off is insane if anything of looking at his age ,you guys are in for a reality check if he commits to it .Last edited by REDEEMER; 05-18-2020, 04:49 AM.Comment

He is hyped because of his aggressive fan friendly style and animal nature. He was the boss in late 80s, when Holmes got old.
Sure, Larry Holmes was much better fighter overall, but less hyped.Comment

Well u calling him 5’10” is another prime example of people trying to give him extra credit. He was always listed at 5’11.5 and Larry Merchant said he saw Tyson measured with his own eyes and was 5’11.5”. Yet I’ve heard so many people say he’s 5’10”, 5’9” and they have absolutely no proof. I’ve been laser measured at just a c hair over 5’10” and I weigh 214lbs lean enough. True, I’m taller than most everyone who claims to be 5’10” and they say I must be taller, but I tell the truth. I know that doesn’t help my argument, but I’m sure Mike is taller than me, just from visuals and weight. At 220lbs lean I look more compact and like bodybuilder than he does, and I have legs. So to me I see that difference in height. Course I have no proof. But then again why does everyone shave inches off Mikes listed height? Who else does this happen with? Why would u give him credit for being 5’10” when he was never listed at that? I mean kids today probably think his first name is “prime”.I dunno mate I think people minimise him too. To watch him bob and weave through combos to then deliver a knockout was a sight to behold. And to watch a man of 5 10 outjab a 6 5, good boxer like Tucker for instance, pretty good stuff. Most importantly I think it brings alot of us back to when the heavyweight champion really did seem invincible and fearless for a time. And he was busy. But then again there's alot of 80s nostalgia type feelings out there now anyway.Comment

Tyson has always had natural ability and he'll still have it at over 50 year old...but that's compared to other 50 year olds. Tyson was left on the canvas by Lewis. I agree. He's got nostalgia going for him but not only is he old, not "conditioned" for a real, structured boxing-sporting contest, but he doesn't have the killer instance the once had.
He would be hurt by any HW today. Not only is he over 50, but he's been out of boxing for 15 years. Even Wlad fought AJ in 2017, kept in shape and is much younger. "Old" Wlad would destroy Tyson today. Tyson would lose to Andy Ruiz. He'd lose to Povetkin. He'd lose to Chisora. He'd lose to Tom Schwarz. He'd lose to Otto Wallin.
I don't he should be licensed to come back for anything other than a 4 round exhibition with headgear and good intentions by both fighters.Last edited by TyrantT316; 05-18-2020, 05:54 AM.Comment

The excitement for Mike Tyson hitting pads really shows how lame the heavyweight division is now. Aside from Fury, the wilder mystique is gone and Joshua already quit in the ring after being pummeled by a 30-1 underdog. That's why fans clamor for the old days.Comment

Sh^t he probably could beat some active guys no doubt at all in my mind. The barrier of entry to be a professional boxer is only slightly more difficult than deciding to be a homeless person. Could he beat anyone who mattered? Idk, but I'd strongly lean no if the fight got into the 3rd round cuz I suspect his power could still have impact on outcomes early vs some mfers.Comment

He was the most dangerous fighter of all time in the 'early rounds' . If his opponent held and managed to survive the first 5 rounds, then if he was any good, he was in the fight. I reckon in his prime he would have been nigh on impossible to beat in a street fight. In reality what is his best win in the ring? His ko of Holmes maybe Michael Spinks. I would say his wins over Bruno but really nothing to write home about if comparing him with the best of all time. He was a phenom but his actual resume puts him down the atg list.Comment

True, but where does he stand, more or less, in your HW ATG list? Do you even have him on your list? I believe that a prime Tyson was a serious KO threat to any other HW to ever lace them up.Comment

I disagree. The HW division is hotter now than its been in a very long time. I think, as Erdman notes, that the excitement is just nostalgia for a wildly popular cultural icon.Comment
