the problem with boxing is the corruptnes of promoters(king) and the orgs(wba/ibf/wbc/etc) and the BS of some fighters(PBF/RJ)... these are the things that are giving boxing a black eye and losing fans...
- BS rankings
- BS PPVS
- BS fights
fans dont wanna order PPV to see oleg vs rock, fans dont care to see don king's heavyweights get all the title shots and most fans dont wanna see PBF continue fighting guys with no chance of beating him...
So either we increase the number of great fights or decrease the number of PPVS for ppvs to become succesful.
We need more fighters like Pacman Barrera Morales Taylor etc. who will take on all comers, and fewer PBF's who talk a lot but deliver little and seek out mismatches. Big PPV buys only happen if the fighters are in competitive fights, except for the very few superstars like DLH. But DLH is a superstar because he did fight the best on the way to where he is. A few good heavyweights are needed too.
The promoters share the blame for putting on garbage fights. How many times do we have to see mediocre Chavez Jr. fighting a bum on a PPV undercard?
I dont seriously think MMA is a threat to boxings popularity; I personally regard MMA as a joke - its more akin to american wrestling than a proper sport, and the appeal is just a sick kind of voyeurism to see masses of blood etc, rather than to see which competitor can his build, brain and tecnhique to outwit his foe. MMA is also mostly hugely boring imo - couple of guys cuddling on the deck like a pair of ****s; Ive seen a few MMA bouts and its either cuddling, or someone being held down and punched in the head while defenceless, like a school yard fight -there is absolutely no honour in it. You can tell it sells itself solely on bloodlust, as opposed to thrilling competition, as the rounds are a ridiculous 5 minutes long and the ref never stops anything unless someone is literally at deaths door.
However, a lot of guys on this thread have made valid points about the value for money fans get from PPV fights. PPV fights are rare in the UK. Apart from domestic boxing, we normally get a lot of live US (east coast) boxing on subscription sports channels, and the only PPV over and above that is if someone popular like Hatton is fighting in a big contest.
The problem with boxing is that everybody wants a piece of the action, and this is the reason for the huge number of worthless titles and the increasing amts of PPV USA fans are asked to fork out for. Poor value for money on PPV and multiple corrupt boxing organisations are the main threats to boxing, not MMA. It is ironic that boxings huge popularity, (which gives rise to alphabet titles and conflicting PPV bouts etc), can at times be indirectly one of the main things to damage its image.
As for the future of MMA, I would be very surprised if it ever got much bigger than it is just now, (certainly in the UK anyway), which is nothing more than an occasional late night slot on an obscure cable channel.
I am a fan of both Boxing and MMA, hell i'm a fan of just about all combat sports.
If pushed, i would say i am bigger Boxing fan than anything else, Boxing is what i train in.
However you can't argue with the fact that MMA is growing in leaps and bounds whilst boxing is standing still even regressing in popularity.
UFC PPVs figures are now at the stage where they are higher than almost all Boxing PPV figures. The only boxer who can draw higher PPV buys than MMA consistently is Oscar De La Hoya. But let's face it, how many more Oscar fights will there be ?
Here's what i think needs to happen.
Boxing PPVs need to be revolved more around than just one fight. Sure have a main event, but there needs to be a complete card, 5+ fights of quality ! Not one good fight and the rest are fillers. Each card should have two Championship bouts at least.
Boxing needs to offer more to be able to compete with MMA. If it doesn't, in 3-4 years it's really going to be struggling
thats it? thats ur magical solution? more fights on the undercards?
and suddenly all of boxing problems will be solved right? gee, who could've guess that to make boxing more popular would be to add more undercard fights?! it all makes sense now!
3-4 years down the road it'll be struggling? boxing has been struggling for over a decade, dumbass.

I hate to admit it cuz i love boxing, but boxing is a dying sport..We lose potential fighters to MMA, people don't have to patience to appreciate boxing anymore. We do have some quality guys coming up in the sport but i feel like once this era of great fighters are gone then the sport of boxing will disappear as well. There's not going to be enough superstars to fight each other, which is what boxing is all about in terms of marketability. also PPV is killing the sport. no one wants to pay 50 bucks for only one good fight. People like MMA cuz the fights are short and sweet also you get more quality fights for your PPV money. I used to be a big fan of MMA (ufc1-10) but lost interest in it. It's just not the same as boxing..I think it's the history of the sport that makes boxing so special.
