I am not a fan of poetry for poetry's sake. I am not against poems or poetic verse but they hold nothing special to me either. A poem, to me, holds value the same way a story does. If I liked it, it's good. If I didn't, it's ****. I do not care about form or standardized practices.
If Andrew wrote this book to be a poet's poem book that is and would be totally lost on me.
That said, I am a boxing fan, I am a Tyson fan, I am a fan of literature, history, and religions. This book nails those and throws in a dash of pop culture for good measure.
Each poem has phrases in it that will catch the eye of a knowledgeable fan.
You're going to read things like "Dempsey before the long count" and quotes from the bible mixed into the poems and their meanings. You'll likely miss a few too and have to go back to find them.
Quickly in the book the game is set. There is a surface meaning, one anyone would catch regardless of their knowledge, and then there is the second, almost like adult jokes in a children's film.
It's a quick book. These are not epic poems. I read it in a few days while taking care of morning bathroom business.
It does a great job recapping Mike's career. There's a little description of most fights, backgrounds, and/or thing said surrounding it.
Once you finish, you are provided with a cheat sheet of sorts. Andrew explains every quote, reference, bit of pop culture, all of it in the end. When you use this tool you realize there was never any catching them all. Erroneous CC of a YT video?
Yeah, that one had me a while until I read that.
Don King quotes? There are plenty.
Sportcastor/writer quotes? There are many.
The bible is all up in this ****s.
References to things you have no chance in hell catching? All over.
It makes the book fun and enjoyable for more than one read. I'm still sitting with it in the morning. Reading, trying to remember what I thought of any given poem on my first go and juxtapose that to my knew knowledge and how I feel about the poem after having gained said knowledge.
Good, quality, intellectual entertainment that does not feel like work in anyway and does lead you to think about things you may not have considered for over a decade.
Finally, regardless of any reference hunting, the poems are provocative and ask you to think about quite a few things very directly. These questions or thoughts are lost on no one and are not only good to ask or suggest but also worked into the poetry seamlessly and smoothly.
All-in-all, buy the book:
Yes, I have had the book a while for this review to be so late, but, Wilder-Fury would have drown any book thread when I got this book and Andrew has more, better, reviews already out in real publications:

Cheers to a.rihn . While we go through our collective regular forum bickering BS be sure to remember this guy is a contributor to the sport and should be respected for his efforts.
