Paying My Respect To Jimmy Glenn

Paying my respect to my legend Jimmy Glenn R.I.P.

Jimmy Glenn as has been described by many as gentle soul, kindness. It brings tears to my eyes as I right this.... I’ll give you a simple example. I was raised in the South Bronx & lived in Jamaica, Queens & Spanish Harlem. These were the real ******. Life was totally different then. Less opportunity then what kids have nowadays. And so like the system had kinda already laid out the blue print for what I was & will become... it was inevitable that the Gang life which was overwhelming prevalent all over NYC. And so like a prophet I was there to fulfill my prophecies....and so at 12 years old I was in it. On a path that MANY do not come back from. I use to hate people that were happy & I loved to be hated. The only that matter then was the crew. Then one day I’m reading this Ring magazine about 2 local kids Juan Laporte & Camilo Negron (who would turnout to be my sparring partner)R.I.P. And so as I put the magazine away. I turn on the TV and load & behold there is one of the local kids fighting on national television! Juan Laporte of time Square gym vs Salvador Sanchez 15 rds! So I decided to go to Times Square Gym. There I met Ralphy Correa who trained me. After a while I started really getting into the sport the rawness & fighting which was all I knew back then. And most importantly the discipline. But I had a big problem I couldn’t afford the gym dues which was $20.00 per month. And I had a part time job in a bodega store that paid me $40.00 per week. I felt sad that I couldn’t afford the the gym dues. My trainer wasn’t charging me anything for training me. So I told him I can’t train anymore. He looked at me & thought for a moment & said come with me. So he took me to Jimmy’s Corner, the bar that’s owned by Jimmy Glenn. It was my first time there. After he had a couple of words with Jimmy, they both come over to me & Jummy’s Southern accent he tells me boy, as he looks down on me, you like boxing? I told him I love to fight! He tells me you don’t have to paid no dues just help Ralphy in the gym when he needs you...

I was so worried about this, here I was a 15 year boy w/ my boxing world hanging in fate of this man. And he allowed me to continue for free! That choice right there was a life changer!
No more gang life, no more getting high which in due time this enabled me to an education & be a contributer to society!!! Thank you Jimmy Glenn for allowing me to be a member of the Times Square boxing gym family.

    To a great man!

    Rest In Peace...

Great story. I went up to the Times Square Gym a few times many years ago; and I was over at Jimmy’s Corner once, around the time of Barrera-Hamed (2001). I don’t recall ever meeting Mr. Glenn, but I have a lot of friends who knew and loved him. Several have posted tributes to Jimmy on Facebook. When you have so many unsolicited testimonials like yours and theirs to go by, you can only conclude Jimmy was indeed a beautiful person.

Rest In Peace, Jimmy. May God keep you.

great post man !!! That type of love spreds all around the world,I had to put away dumbbells /roll up wraps once they dried , sweep , and windex the mirrors for my dues for ages at my gym . Only in boxing !! I am in Canada and id love to see them do that with hockey, I could never play it was almost 5 k a year for dues plus equipment which was also out of this world. It wasn't realistic. Only the rich kids got to train / play. I kept my hockey on the streets and took my fighting off them !!! If it wasn't for my areas Jimmy Glenn , I would have never climbed thru the ropes , and God knows where I would have been without boxing ..

      RIP JIMMY GLENN

And stand up all the coaches out there who live by that same code . Stand up boxing !!!

We lost a good one , I didn't know Glenn personally but I've heard from many people and read from.many credible sources great stuff like this about Jimmy. Thanks for the share man . The world needs more men like him !!!! Boxing lost a real one !!! My condolences to his students and family, sorry for your loss bro .

Poor man's sport , rich in history and brotherhood . Jimmy seems to have touched alot of people and helped make the world a better place , RESPECT !!! R.I.P

Good story and good tribute to Jimmy.

I made a thread the other day about Teddy Atlas discussing Cus D'Amato. Cus did a lot to help Teddy and turn him around from the bad path he was following. Just like he helped turn Mike Tyson around.

One of the many reasons why boxing has so much appeal to the poor and working classes.

          Guys,
I can only comment from what I saw. The trainers there were some hard core oldskool. And as I look back, as a trainer that I am now, I couldn’t even tie their shoes! They were all masters of their trade.
There was Donald Hayes, Harold Weston Sr, Carlos Espada, Georgi Colon, Ralphy Correa, Willie Dunn, Johnny Pearson, Bernard Forbe (who was like my uncle in boxing), Robles & Guava, Tony trickman Norris, Sid Martin, Sinbad, etc... there were much more. I remember In very rare occasions when the gym was closing they would have there get togethers like any other working people do after work. And all you would here was hey don’t **** around Jimmy won’t tolerate this & that. They were a rough & tough crew but they liked & respected Jimmy Glenn. And as an unwritten rule they knew not to even dare to go Jimmy’s corner if they were intoxicated. Jimmy didn’t had to say much, rarely ever raised his voice. He was a true leader.
I agree big shout out to those trainers that help as an alternative to steer fighters into a better path.
Thanks for your kind words & be safe
          God bless.

This is a beautiful story and it proves how boxing, despite being a brutal sport, also saves lives and creates champions in and out of the ring Jimmy Glenn was a quiet but very important figure in the sport.
