Mike already ****** then, he was there just to get a money. Tyson got stopped against 2 journeymen in 2004 and 2005 and retired , so I don`t understand how is he a good win for Lewis in 2002.
Lennox is getting too much credit for beating Mike Tyson

I dont rate that win very high for Lewis's legacy whatsoever and iam a big lewis fan . Altho it was nice to see him put the nail in the coffin . Alot of people say mike ducked lewis when he dropped the wbc belt to go after the holy fight , but I think more people wanted to see mike vs holy at the time even tho holy was having apparent medical issues etc . Mike really fought both holy and lewis too late ...obviously lewis more so .
The thing that really gets me is when people give lewis the title of best heavyweight of the 90s based off that win . Saying he beat all the other top guys from that decade , when in reality it was in 2002 and mike was a shell of the shell of himself by that point .
To answer your post straight up tho anyone who rates this win as one of Lewis top wins is reaching to say the least . On paper a decent win . But more just a nail in the coffin ( somewhat ) to the debate of tyson vs lewis that had been spoken about since the 80s when they sparred as amateurs.Comment

My question is what could've been had Tyson not went to prison. I know it's a muted question considering but I still think he would've been way higher on the list of ATG and beat Holyfield and Lewis had he not went to prison. Could've should've would've I suppose. It still begs to question what if ya know.Comment

Lewis was a bad mother****er. Who knows what would of happened if he fought Mike before Mike self destruct. Mike was knocking people out within seconds and with either hand.Comment

For a guy who was barely undisputed he does get a lot of overrating to be honest, but, he's one of the best boxers ever so it's okay really.
No one really give Lennox any business for being the latest to the game, and the freshest face of the three big names of his era.
Tyson debuted in 85 and was the man by like 87, and didn't lose until 90. Lennox debuted in 89.
Evander debuted in 84 and did not lose until 92.
Lennox got the benefit of not just watching these men put out quite a lot of media covering exactly how they do what they do, but also, he got the benefit of seeing how another man beats them. That's a big ****ing deal when you're talking timing on a resume.
Both men suffer 3 losses before Lennox is ready to fight them.
Evander is a better win than Tyson but honestly his best win to me is Vitali. He waited for Holy and Tyson to be on the slide, clearly on the slide too. Vitali was still a fresh fighter with only one how-to in way of beating him.
I'm not saying Lennox is bad, I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a spot in top lists, I don't bat an eye at folks who reckon he's the greatest or near it, but, Evander and Mike did more for the 90s and Lennox gets their credit quite often because he beat them after the 90s.
I mean really...99 and 02 for champions who debuted in the mid 80s? Punch out is like 87 or 86 or some ****....think about it. Dude had an easier path.
Also, he never defended his undisputed. Mike did like 9 times. Clearly the time to get Mike was when he was the reigning, undefeated, undisputed HW champion. Lennox waited nearly a decade for that despite having been top ranked since 91.
And before anyone tells me he debuted later because he started later; Mike and Lennox both debuted in the amateurs in 84; he waited Mike out. Evander was 83. No reason for Lennox to fight Evander in 99 or Mike in 02 other than he was waiting for the right time to beat them.
Resume wise Lennox is kinda weak. Undisputed wise Lennox is kinda weak. But, he is well loved all the same. Probably, and not many are going to admit it, because of 'the eye test'. Watch that man take out Grant and tell me he wouldn't be a champion in any era. Y'all can't, so I get going over-the-top with him, but, yeah, his resume is actually kinda weak if you actually time it out.Comment

tis a weak win for sure, but he'd already beat the guy who beat him, if that counts.
He must have known Tyson wasnt the same after prison and just wanted the money fight all that time after. Who wouldnt, there was noone left to face.Comment

Most people who followed boxing at the time thought Mike Tyson was completely done and a total sideshow. All those people expected Lewis to destroy Tyson.
Those people don’t base Lewis’ legacy off of that fight or talk it up as one of his best wins.
What that fight did was help Lewis gain the respect of the average us citizen.
The average Joe on the street in the United States who didn’t think really follow boxing didn’t think highly of Lennox Lewis. They thought he was chinny and they didn’t know anyone he beat besides the only other crossover star he faced, Evander Holyfield.
That average Joe also bought into the early-2000s Mike Tyson myth built by showtime. After Tyson bit off Holyfield’s ear, he was fed no-hopers and decent contenders who had serious flaws. He knocked out all of them.
So the average Joe saw a guy who knocked out everyone he faced and hadn’t loss since a DQ years ago. The average Joe also didn’t understand that the DQ was Tyson quitting, they saw it as him being a crazy bad ass.
So Lewis’ win over Tyson is overrated by people who are general sports fans and barely follow the sport. Because it was a super fight and Tyson had a pretty record, they think it was a statement win by Lewis. Most people that follow boxing don’t think that at all.Comment
