Larry Merchant was one of the best because he called out everyone and kept it real.
The promoter of the show?
Called out.
The fighters in the main event?
Called out.
Judges, referees, his fellow commentators and unofficial scorers?
Called out.
No one was safe. And that’s part of what made HBO great. They told the story around the fight and it was objective. 95-percent of that was Larry Merchant. Max Kellerman also did a good job of filling that role when it was his time.
Merchant and Kellerman were boxing reporters who gave objective takes to the audience. That way someone just tuning in could understand every angle.
But with HBO out of the game and with the networks being so deeply in bed with promoters now, objectivity is gone.
You don’t get that real storytelling around the fight anymore. The talking heads (like Lampley) are still there. The boxers offering analysis during the fights are still there. But the objective boxing reporters who tell the story of the fight are no longer a part of the broadcasts.
Except for Chris Mannix. Mannix is exactly that and will tell it like it is. I’ve heard him offer all angles and criticisms on everyone including DAZN, GBP, Matchroom and the boxers.
So I just wanted to state that I appreciate him. We all should.
