Will boxing thrive or flounder when it returns?

Will this sustained absence leave fans eager and impatient to watch or will the competition from other returning sports hurt the boxing industry?

All sport should thrive now we all realise what we've been missing. I hope promoters ease us back in rather than shoving PPV right down our throats. Being a liverpool fan though, I cant wait for the premier league to return too.

As an Everton fan I hope it gets voided.😂
I think you would be awarded it anyway though tbh.

I think Boxing could get pushed to the back of people’s minds if the EPL, NBA, NFL, La Liga, Serie A etc are all getting restarted around the same time. The competition for dates is gonna be crazy.

Due to the economic impact of Covid I think it would be morally wrong to stage PPV’s, but you know how greedy promoters are...

IF it comes back i think it will be about the same. we have no real knowledge about this virus and it may be many years before large crowds can gather safely. It is the same for other sports. everyone wants the problem to be over in a few months but that doesn't mean it will be over soon. I don't think boxing fans will turn to other sports because other sports are in the same boat as boxing. If it's not safe for crowds to gather for boxing then it's just as unsafe for crowds to gather for any other sport. I only watch boxing and MMA and no other sports but that is just me.

I think it’s going to thrive because of the void
But it will be up to promoters to ride the wave by giving us good fights worth a damn
I don’t see boxing failing cause of other sports returning at the same time because people will need all the sport they can get
At least in the beginning , that’s where the promoters come in

I just worry if we’re getting those sort of BS matchups in competition with say the NBA playoffs or the UCL finals were the best are facing the best, boxing may struggle to gain traction in a now uber competitive market.

Well that’s where the promoters will have to realize what they need to do to be competitive
Bullchit fights just won’t cut it once all sports resume

I think there is a real opportunity here for the sport, IF (and its a big IF) promoters and networks are willing to play it safe and play it smart.

Boxing has a few advantages. And is likely to be up and running before the larger team sports are able to. Boxing has a relatively small set-up -- less camera crews, less support staff. And bouts can be held basically anywhere - the sport isn't tied down to certain stadiums, states, or even countries. Heck, they could even splice together a fight night with fights from different locations.

WWE caught A LOT of flack for running their show because they tried to act as if there wasn't a major global pandemic - they didn't want to acknowledge it, and that's a bad look. Dana White is in a similar situation - talks about "fight island" sound more like a personal ego-trip than a heroic "sport-as-socially-unifying event".

But if boxing can get itself some likeable fighters, a safe location, and then market it in a way that isn't offensive to people - I see a real opportunity for major network coverage that could reach a wide audience.

But then again, it's boxing - so who knows!
