This highly anticipated fight between pound-for-pound monarch and longtime middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler and the "Hit Man" Thomas Hearns exceeded even the most optimistic hype as the duo produced perhaps the greatest first round in boxing history in terms of two-way action between elite fighters (56 of 83 for Hagler- all of his punches were power shots to 50 of 82 for Hearns.

it was not in either guys best interest to fight that way

Hagler should have been looking to take Hearns deep, back his size/strength to wear Tommy down and stop him late... Hearns should have been looking to use his length/speed and box Haglers ears off, while keeping him honest with that elephant gun right hand

Hagler was probably worried about Hearns building a early lead so he tried to jump on him and make it a dog-fight

imagine what people were thinking when the first round ended

There was tension in the lead up so they were out for blood...thank God they were because it became an instant classic. Although, Emmanuel steward said that when he walked in the locker room before the fight, someone was giving hearns a leg massage which caused him to flip out. He said that he knew hearns wouldn't be able to last the distance with his legs having been massaged. So he told him that he had to knock hagler out early. That may have contributed to hearns approach too.

since this fight already happened i'm hoping compubox was a hell of a lot more accurate than some of their other fights where they claim a guy lands 11 power punches in a round when in fact he landed zero. guessing is so fun! maybe it landed! i'm so glad nobody takes compubox seriously...oh wait they spit out those stats after every round like its accurate. i'm sure that doesnt affect peoples views on the fight at all...

yea I never read anything into pre-fight tensions, that shlt usually goes out the window as soon as nerves start setting in... and it is a complete non-issue after the they start to tire

I remember Steward talking about the massage, good point

Fight would have been crazy exciting live I’m sure. I’m not sure what type of fight most fans or experts where expecting though. I assume it was expected to be an intriguing fight based on what I’ve seen and know about both fighters. I assume the wild sloppy slugfest was a surprise? Because it was a wild sloppy slugfest. I think the commentator did a lot of selling though. I don’t think Hagler was ever as hurt as the commentator said though. It was a sloppy wild fight, rare for two top guys. I get that. Exciting. Crazy. But it gets referenced too often to sell other fights. Did any person think GGG and Canelo would actually look anything like that who werent trying to sell the fight? Gimme a break. The fight is interesting in what happened. But it’s overrated as any sort of masterclass performance. The “massage scandal” doesn’t help
anything. Hearns was running away most of the time and it’s in no way the real defining result anyone wanted.
