Comments Thread For: David Benavidez: A Fight With Me & Canelo Would Be Explosive!

David Benavidez was originally scheduled to have a homecoming fight on April 18 that has since been cancelled due to coronavirus. The 23-year-old WBC champion Benavidez (22-0, 19 KOs), however, wants to order a more palatable opponent to be booked other than Roamer Alexis Angulo.

The winner of this fight gets Boxing's Baddest MF'er title.
Canelo should jump at the chance to fight Benavidez while he is young...

Canelo vs Benevides would be a good fight, but not particularly difficult for Canelo. Don't mean to be a stickler, but journalists should strive for accuracy particularly on basic facts. Contrary to Mr. Akopayan's assertion Canelo and Benevides are not "fellow countrymen." Canelo is born and bred in Guadalajara, Mx. You can't get more Mexican than that, Benevides is a Mexican American from Phoenix, AZ. They are no more "countrymen" than Nino Benvenuti and Ray Mancini. In this case, one is Italian and the other is Italian American. That is not the same thing.

This is the absolute best fight that can be made at 168.

It’s the blood that’s in you that makes you not wherever you’re born. Benavidez has Mexican blood regardless if he speaks Spanish or not.

Finally someone with a plural wit and commence sense says what I have been saying for years. But this is what I have come to expect with poorly educated boxing journalists who are given to playing into nationalist marketing in boxing that seems to go back to the Julio Cesar Chavez years and how he was marketed by the evil Don King. You are right, Benevidez is not canelo’s countrymen, they are not the same race either.
Having said all that, don’t expect to EVER see Canelo in with him....Canelo will continue to feast on second raters from the Matchroom stable

I think this fight would be better than Canelo vs. BJS! If Jermall Charlo really wanted to make a statement, he would be calling out Benavidez! Wishful thinking!

It would be a great fight but it seems like Canelo wants Saunders first at 168. That makes sense because Saunders is small at the weight and not a puncher and Canelo is pretty much always guaranteed to win on the scorecards. Canelo will probably let Benavidez, Smith and Plant figure out who's #1 out of those 3, then fight for the #1 spot.
