The Quiet Man, John Ruiz, how "good" was he

Horrible ugly style to watch, but how effective was he?

If he was around today how would he do?

I think he beats a lot of the second tier like Whyte

I agree ruiz was horrendous to watch, one of the worst entertainment wise !!! But he was effective with his horrible style and faired well fighting a lot of good fighters . He would have a shot vs anyone in the top 10 outside of joshua and fury imo . I hate to say it . But he was effective and a good fighter . Just the worst style to watch. He seemed to develope PTSD after the tua fight and became the double jab , right hand to clinch master LOL

Better than people give him credit for.
I think he wouldn't do so well in today's era, but he had his own era on lockdown for a couple of years.
Seemed to be a gate way type of fighter after a while with all of the smaller guys moving up from cruiser and light heavy to win titles off him.
But he pretty much ended Holyfields career as a legit heavy, and turned back the challenge of #1 Kirk Jonson, and also Golota and Oquendo, who were still decent fighters in 2003.
I think he should have rematched with Tua at some point though, while he was champ

Holy was just old and done i cant give ruiz credit for ending his prime or run as a top heavy . Altho ruiz beat bubba johnson he was losing the fight and won via DQ . I think golota and oquendo were good wins for the time too . So was rahman and past prime holy . Iam surprised ruiz and byrd never tried to unify , god that would be an awful fight , maybe worse than byrd vs Williamson if that's even possible 😂 I thought ruiz beat value too .

They just kept handing him wba title shots. I wish he took a differnt route and fought more guys . I mean for his own sake . I personally wouldnt want to watch ruiz fight any top guys unless he got KOd lol . He def should have rematches tua but I think he was so damaged psychologically from the tua fight that he would have prolly pulled a Curtis Harper and ran from the ring when the first bell rung lol .

Lewis vs ruiz was talked about a few times. But lewis gave up the WBA strap eventually . Some haters called that a duck but I def dont agree . Ruiz deserved the shot . But no one cares he didnt get it except for norman stone 😂

3 close fights vs Holy doesn't mean he's "accomplished much more".

Watching stoney in his corner going on tangents was far more entertaining than any of Ruiz's fights except tua . I believe norm got kicked out of John's corner by the ref one fight , mid fight if iam not mistaken LOL

That was the most hilarious s_hit ever!

Ref: "one more outburst from you and you're out of here"

Norm: "get the f_uck out of our corner. F_ucking jackoff"

Ruiz was by no means a good fighter. He was straight up trash. The guy figured out how to drag high level fighters down to his level by limiting the amount of punches thrown. When they would get used to the frustrating, garbage flow of the fight, he would suddenly turn it up a gear and sneak in a power shot. It was the equivalent of a man winning an arm wrestle by shitting himself and then cranking the power to 100%. He’ll win because the opponent takes his mind off the competition.

Maybe but not the best comparison but I put more thought into it than Ruiz deserves and it felt appropriate to end it that way.
