Tito wanted JCC early on in his career but his team steered him away from him wisely. Letting the old lion fade and go away before is a sound strategy. Vargas had talent but he should have waited and fought them years later.

Vargas is one of the best 154 pound fighters ever. He’s had a better overall career than GGG has had so far.

        He’s a two time champion.

He was the youngest ever to win a title at 154 when he did it... and he did it against a very good opponent.

His resume only has world class competition on it. Yory Boy Campus on has to be one of the toughest 17 fight stretches in history.

He has a win over Winky Wright. That always blows up the “Vargas doesn’t have a big win theory” since Wright won almost every round against Trinidad and Mosley twice.

He won or was in a very competitive fight in every fight, except for the Mosley rematch.

So basically, the argument is that he should have fought 20 bums and knocked them out in between all his tough fights. Then he would have been 46-5 with 42 knockouts, made a few extra bucks and had a bigger national media presence. Some people would also consider him to be a better fighter for some reason.

I’m going to appreciate what he did instead of wishing for that. Vargas did what we want all boxers to do. He won a title at a very young age and then fought absolutely everyone until he couldn’t fight at that level anymore. He’s the exact opposite of the promoter created monsters we have today. I will respect his place in history instead of pretending like GGG did something right and Vargas didn’t.

He should have waited until Tito retired.

          Damn.

          Imagine?

Are you kidding? Vargas had a hall of fame career compared to GGG.

Sure, he lost most of his big fights, usually even got KOd, but they were all big brawls against big names.

Vargas will still be remembered 20 years from now, where GGG will only be remembered for having a lot of defenses.

            Guys Vargas fought :

            Winky Wright
            Tori Boy Campos
            Felix Trinidad
            Oscar de La Hoya
            Ike Quartey
            Shane Moseley

            Guys GGG fought:

            Canelo
            Jacobs
            Brooks

There's just no comparison there. None whatsoever

If we are using that analogy then Fernando Vargas should have been careful and patient like Canelo (and Golden Boy). Don't you think Golovkin wanted to fight Canelo earlier and not later since he is 8 years older?

Vargas was 22 and he "rushed" to face a 27-year old Trinidad

Canelo was 27 and took his time facing a 35-year old Golovkin (in part because of Golden Boy, to be fair)

If anything, Vargas could have waited for Trinidad to age and look a bit vulnerable but he (Vargas) wanted to be the first one to slay the dragon. He came up short but he had/has nothing to be ashamed of.

Canelo waited until he had the best chance to win against Golovkin. I would have liked to see them fight a year (or two) earlier but GGG was still very good (and far from shot) so we move on.

Those bums in between sometimes help you prepare for the tougher fights. Some of those he could have won had he used better defense or hit Tito back in da nuts lol

That's fair, but do we want sound strategy or guys daring to be great? Chavez was still great in the early to mid-90s but what if Trinidad had gotten to him before Oscar De La Hoya did?

I'm just playing devil's advocate because there are pros and cons to both approaches:

If you do what Vargas did then you might get ruined by an all-time great in his prime (unless you pull it off, then you're on the road to becoming an all-time great yourself)

If you wait a bit and give yourself the best chance to win then you might pull out the victory (like Canelo with GGG) but then you have to hear about how you waited for him to get old, ect
