Do boxing fans have a problem with a fighter retiring undefeated?

I’ve noticed that Marciano, Calzaghe and Mayweather all get a lot of criticism in regards to remaining undefeated.

    People often say:
-They should have lost to this/that guy.
    -They avoided this/that guy.
-They fought fighters when they past their primes.

Now there may be some truth to some of those statements but it still doesn’t change the fact that they were simply better than or performed better against every fighter they fought.

or maybe they were judged to have performed better than an opponent by 3 or less individuals, which they do not agree with or strongly disagree with

Boxing is a dangerous sport that can cause brain damage or death. I never have a problem with any boxer retiring at any time.

Not to mention Andre Ward I have NO problem with a fighter knowing when to quit though and we cant hate on them for leaving the sport undefeated but every guy you named COULD have done more in it even if it meant taking that 1 loss.

Your poster name is why I mention Ward because Roy Jones Jr dared to be great even after decline. It would be nice to see fighters keep fighting until they just aren't top dog anymore but reality is some are just doing it for the paycheck and when the money gets right they get out.

Ya cant blame em for it though at the end of the day that's what pays their bills.

I just think they all had great careers, so I wouldn’t criticise them for not doing this or that.

I completely get your point. I think it’s human nature to want to see somebody lose or to want to find out what it would take to beat them.

I for example always wanted to see Floyd lose, mainly cause I don’t really like him as a person but also because I wanted to see what type of fighter it would take to beat him. But as soon he retired I was fine with the fact I never got to see him lose because over the course of his 50 fights nobody was good enough to beat him.

I feel some guys wanted to see a fighter lose so bad that they start saying he should have, could have done this just because they wanted to see him lose.

            yes

Every undefeated fighter has a whole cast and crew of haters who talks about them way more than their fans actually do.

Here's something else interesting, as someone who does value an 0 I can tell you the whole argument about " you only like X because they never lost" is untrue as ****. That could be true for me, but, the overlap between unbeaten champions' fans is small as ****.

I am the only Marciano/Wilder fan I know. I know other Marciano fans. I know other Wilder fans. I don't know of any other Marciano and Wilder fans other than me. I know he just lost, but, just is a key word there.

Marciano, Mayweather, Calzaghe, Barry, and Ward fans are all different groups with the biggest overlap probably being Money/Ward with the second being Marciano/Calzaghe.

No one gives any ****s about Lopez or Barry.

Calzaghe and Ward fans are somehow at odds.

Marciano and Mayweather fans don't get along at all.

Joe and Rock share mostly racist fans, usually the style difference is enough for one base to not agree with the other; Joe's fans don't like brutes and Rock's fans don't like slaps.

Money and Ward have a lot of racist fans too but they at least have similar styles, or, more similar than the popular whites at least and so I think at least a portion are honest to god fans of defense.

For me, man I like a winner. I like a prepared fighter who always finds a way to keep winning. I don't care for TF's style at all but if he keeps winning I have to shut my dumb mouth eventually....and isn't that the point of being a champion?

Giving Marciano, Ward, Joe, Floyd, Jim, or Ricardo a loss is conjecture and assumption. One should respect the fact that these men were never wrong about what it takes to win. That's an amazing talent.

That last paragraph is exactly my point man. Regardless of whether you liked these guys or not you have to respect the fact that they passed every single test.

I feel like being undefeated is always associated with a guy who “protected” their zero which isn’t always the case.

                I agree, exactly.

I think people have a problem with success to be honest. They like fighters to be humble and to lose everyone now and then, not often, but every not and then. That's greatness to alot.

So in order to tear down those beyond reproach they spin some of the funniest bull****. Here are a few of my favs:

                Mayweather ducked Margarito.

                Marciano ducked Liston

                Ward ducked 3G

                Calzaghe ducked Froch

Yep all four are complete BS.

People get to a point were they want somebody to lose that bad that they become delusional.

Then you get the kind of crazy suggestions like Mayweather should have went to 160 to fight GGG, Ward should go to HW to fight AJ etc etc.

Nothing wrong retiring unbeaten. But just don't use that as evidence of being best of era, let alone goat

Don't want either you to self proclaim or your fans to because of unbeaten record.

Nobody will criticise your unbeaten record if you don't make too much of it and boast about it too much
