Was the 1980s the greatest decade in boxing?

The had one of the strongest Welterweight classes of any era

2 legendary heavyweights, Holmes and Tyson, dominating the decade

The legendary Marvin Hagler's entire championship reign

And the early careers of JC Chavez and Pernell Whitaker.

I defy you to name a better era or decade in boxing history

The 1980s was a great decade but not for boxing.

A huge chunk of the world's top boxing talent was locked down under communism.

The "world champion" was more like the New York-London champion & for all we knew, 100th in the world.

(I realize this criticism also applies to the preceding decade which boxing hipsters worship, and stand by it)

actually a valid point. anyone that disputes this just needs to look at the massive diversity of talent that became world champions since communism was essentially defeated and people were allowed to compete

Put that way yes I agree. Leonard, Hearns need to be added. How about the 84 Olympic team. What about Micheal Spinks at light heavy, Or Pryor, or Arguello. Now no question it's the best decade.

No. Far, far from it. Larry Holmes was very good, but there has been 10 or so better HW's since. Tyson would be maybe top 15/20 HW today.

Tyson is worse than Wilder? No way Tyson is worse than top5.

Just because Fury gave Wilder a beat down, doesn't mean anyone else can. Wilder would KO any other HW right now and little Mike.
