Chavez slowly broke Taylor down starting in the 2nd round when Taylor started bleeding from the mouth. Very few including Jim Lampley and the HBO crew understood what was really happening. Chavez basically beat up Taylor so bad he was never an elite fighter. With 6 seconds to go Taylor could not continue in the 12th. Richard Steele made the right call. Taylor could not respond when ask twice are you ok by Steele. Taylor left the ring that night with parts of his skull cracked.
Lou Duva and Georgie Benton told Taylor he needed the last round. The fight was closer than scorecards made it out to be.
