Comments Thread For: BoxingScene Championship Stats, Records Update: March 2020

Heavyweight: The first update since November of last year, 2020 brings wholesale changes everywhere but on the lineage line. Anthony Joshua regained all three of the alphabet belts he lost to Andy Ruiz, pulling off a rare immediate turnaround following a knockout loss. Tyson Fury has now won the single belt that eluded him thus far, the WBC's. For those who believe the "Gypsy King" formally retired before resuming his career in 2018, he is now a two-time Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and Ring Magazine heavyweight king. From this lone vantage point, he simply extended a reign dating to 2015 with his dominant knockout win of Deontay Wilder with his sixth title defense.

John Riel Casimero winning the WBO bantamweight championship is the top achievement among the new champions for me.

John Riel Casimero probably caught Zolani Tete at the right moment : As Tete suffered a shoulder injury during the WBSS Bantamweight tournament, Casimero won the Interim WBO bantamweight title against Ricardo Espinoza Franco and thereby forced the mandatory vs. Tete later on that year ( 2019 ) -- perfect timing.

If winning three titles in three weights with his terrific upset over Zolani Tete was not enough, it opened opportunities that otherwise would not be possible for John Riel ; a meeting with another great champion that many experts consider #1. P4P in Las Vegas, the 'Monster' Naoya Inoue.

Its important to note that, like Zolani Tete, Naoya Inoue is also coming from a serious orbital bone injury which he suffered in the finals of the WBSS vs. Nonito Donaire.

I wonder could the stars be aligned for John Riel Casimero to double down on his success and possibly win a seat at Canastota with another massive upset?

Tete has always been vulnerable to a degree. Interesting that both he and Casimero share the same knockout loss: Mthalane. If he beats Inoue, it would be a stunner in a fascinating career that includes ridding the title ranks of the by then increasingly ugly reign of Ruenroeng and the wile Lazarte fight.

Ironically, I just glanced over Moruti Mthalane record over at boxrec and the log states that Mthalane is still suspended 'indefinitely' in Las Vegas over his TKO loss to Nonito Donaire from 2008

Further, Naoya Inoue vs. John Riel Casimero is apparently taking place at the same venue ( Mandalay Bay Events Center ). So I'm wondering if this is bad luck for John Riel Casimero, that gran-dad Mthalane got TKO in the chosen battle ground for Inoue vs. Casimero and that Inoue just got a win over the man that beat grandpa Mthalane ( Nonito Donaire in the WBSS Bantamweight tournament ).

One thing is clear to me, Grandpa Moruti Mthalane is a BAD-MAN.
