So taking the first offer is ******, right?

I just wanted to make sure we’re all on the same page now.

Everyone said Billy Joe Saunders was ****** to turn down Canelo Alvarez’s first offer. Everyone said he was lucky to be considered. Everyone said he must have turned down the offer because he was scared.

Nope, he was negotiating. Now he’s getting $8 million.

It’s almost like his boxing promoter and management team knows how to negotiate better than random people on a boxing forum.

It's a new era fandom thing. Stans for any given A Side love the dynamic or something. A vicarious thrill from the "flex" of offering something that's just enough to not be peanuts, and the lucky selected opponent urchin clutching what's offered with gratitude like Oliver Twist. Real dorky ****.

He’s managed by MTK, so i’m sure they knew not to accept the first offer. They know how it works.

Even Golden Boy never expected them to accept the first offer really. They also know how it works.

It is called negotiation and very few well managed fighters will take the first deal. I think the argument was that Billy is not worth what Kov was worth.

Who ever fights Canelo that has a bit of a name will get paid very well.

Nobody says don't take the first offer you idiot. lol When you get an offer multiple times your career high then you counter asking for double that offer you look ****** and look like you are pricing yourself out the fight. There is a huge difference negotiating a little more then a offer then demanding double the offer. lol It's also compounded when you don't get the fight. Saunders didn't get 8M he is getting in the "neighborhood of 8M" so less then 8M but close to it. He got the fight instead of Smith because he asked for less and was reasonable to what Canelo offered him as opposed to Smith who demanded 10M and it cost him the fight.

I think you are giving BJS and his team too much credit.

He and his team didn't do a great negotiating job as much as they were in the right place at the right time. Canelo has choices but many of those choices he didn't want to exercise in May. When the Murata fight fell through, BJS became one of the choices. Plant didn't want to be considered and Callum stuck to an amount that DAZN and Canelo didn't want to pay.

BJS being the last man standing is getting a good payday for sure. I just don't think this was negotiation 101 as you make it out to be.

I think Saunders was really the ONLY guy Canelo wanted to fight in May just like Kovalev was the only guy he wanted to fight last time, Time will tell but I think Canelo is no longer able to make middleweight and is done forever with 160. He vacated 175 because he is not a full light heavyweight and Bivol and Beterbiev are much better than Kovalev. I think Canelo will be fighting at 168 from now on and he wants a world title at that weight. Saunders has not looked impressive in over two years when he looked sharp beating Lemieux. He looked very bad last fight coming from behind to KO a guy nobody ever heard of before. I think Canelo beats him easily. I think Canelo beats Callum Smith but Smith would be a harder fight. Smith can punch and he can box from long range and he has a huge reach advantage, Smith looked bad in his last fight as well but is still harder to beat than Saunders in my opinion. There was no reason for Saunders to take less than 8 million knowing he was by far the front runner and knowing Jacobs, Kovalev and Khan all got about 12 to 13 million to fight Canelo.
