I just don’t think Vitali has ever fought anyone like Fury. The closest fighter Vitali fought that was a “big man who can box” was Lennox Lewis, who was 6’5”, and 83” reach and Lennox won. Vitali, at 6’7” was sort of his day’s Fury. A skilled giant who can move very well for his size and put boxing fundamentals before KO’s (although the KO’s naturally came regardless).
And he finally met another relatively big man who can box and had good power and he lost. Everyone will have their opinion on how he lost, but he lost, he got his face all cut up via punches, and lost the boxing match. Vitali was really a never before seen HW at the time, being that big, having that good a chin, and that skilled, plus powerful. The era before him were 6’2”-6’4”, who made the era of the 5’10”- 6’ 1” HW’s go extinct.
Boxing at the HW level historically seems to be about height, reach, size and what skill you have for your size. Does the taller man ALWAYS win? No, we’ve seen that proven wrong a bunch of times but if you’re bigger, you might have a good shot against the taller man, e.g. AJ vs Ruiz 20+ lb difference (hindsight I know but just an example).
Ali being a tall, great mover, dominated HW with his skills, reach, and height in an era where HW’s were still not that tall yet. Of course along came a giant like Foreman and Ali beat him which is one of the reasons Ali is called The Greatest. But Ali is the exception, not the rule. I fully believe weight, height, reach matters at the HW level (and having good skill for your size) more than any other weight class.
