It's an interesting point, in that the ref will have access that the judges won't to the fight.

They used to have referees judging all British title contests until (ISTR) about three years ago or so. They still do domestic bouts for novices and so on.

However, the bias can set in, particularly if the referee is also having to caution another fighter. If his one job is to constantly reprimand another fighter and his other job is to score the round, can you imagine the two not clashing?

I remember my brother Danny Williams getting jobbed against Michael Sprott because his showboating was pissing Dave Parris off. Though if he hadn't lost his titles he would probably never have got the Tyson shot, and there's another story...
