  • Comments Thread For: Vergil Ortiz Jr. Ready To Graduate To Contender Level Versus Vargas

The mandate has been delivered to Vergil Ortiz Jr. along with the final reminder of his incredible 2019 campaign. A press conference held Monday afternoon at Golden Boy Promotions headquarters in Los Angeles wound up serving dual purpose, with the session's primary function to announce Ortiz's first ring adventure of 2020. The unbeaten knockout artist from Grand Prairie, Texas will face veteran welterweight Samuel Vargas in the headlining act of a March 28 show to air live on DAZN from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

He is gonna destroy Vargas. This young man has been a contender already(even though he was named POTY last year). Despite being at different points in their careers at the time, Herrera, Orozco, & Solomon were all more highly-regarded fighters than Vargas. He hammered & stopped all of them for the first time their careers. Speaks volumes for someone as young as him.

I agree this kid is the real deal. Tough can fight, he needs to step up competition.

I feel you. As talented as he is & as much as fans in general want to see him in big fights already, he's still only 21. Still plenty of time for him to be groomed properly.

anybody can look good fighting a bunch of nobodies. Ortiz kills himself to make this weight with no significant names on his resume. go ahead and make the money doe!!!

This Ortiz Jr. dude is going to be a problem. He is already #2 in the WBO rankings so I expect him to get a shot at Crawford in a year or 2 or fight for the title if Crawford goes to 154. He is the WBA interim (i believe). Manny better stay far away from this dude.

ANother poster mentioned it before-would love to see Spence/Ortiz Jr. fight in Dallas area. That would be a massive event.

Ortiz just looks too big to be at this weight despite being able to make weight. He looks more like a super welterweight which may explain why he destroys his opponents so effortlessly. I’m surprised he doesn’t break his hand with those power punches he throws given how small his hands are

Insane: I was about to BoxRec him to see his record and thought he was 25 or 26. I don't blame him or his handlers for taking a few more C or B fighters. That being said, Ortiz looks like dynamite.

Speaking of dynamite, Kid Dynamite Mike Tyson was 20 when he won his first world title. Now I'm putting Ortiz in that discussion.

Seems like a step down in comp from his last 3 opponents - all good for now, this should be a year where he takes a step.

I wonder if GBP might match him up with the other prospects they have: Cobbs, Alexis Rocha, or Rashidi Ellis.

Thought it might be Ellis - but not so sure, Ellis has some legit potential as a wildcard at WW in the future, so IDK if they make that one until later.

Could be versus Rocha, I think Ortiz would get a spectacular uppercut KO in that fight
