The problem is that Canelo is being overpaid and DAZN are bleeding money. Canelo is not generating enough to even break even for DAZN, apparently only generating 100,000 subscribers which means he is probably only generating them 1/3 of his alleged purse.
So with that said, DAZN need to continue to throw away money and get him opponents who they can market as not being yet another bum or over the hill star.
This is where any opponent will ask for their fair share of $$$ and that is the bargaining position any credible opponent is in.
IF, let's say, economically, Canelo was as big as AJ in which he is generating his own purse and delivering a return to the promoters, that is when he would have an easier way to select opponents.
Example, AJ brings in HUGE dollars irrespective of who he fights , he's a ONE sided champ.
Whereas the other guys who are paraded around as being the biggest stars, are FAR from it in reality and the way to yardstick that is to see how they do when they fight nobodies (e.g Canelo vs Liam Smith, vs other bums did very low numbers)
