Well, everybody seems to think that Maskaev got lucky in 1999 when he knocked Rahman out of the ring with one punch. I don't think 4 out of 5 people watched that fight, because almost nobody realizes that Maskaev was mopping the floor with Rahman in 7th and 8th rounds of the fight. So, everybody expects Maskaev to go in and land that one lucky punch.Originally posted by McKayMaskaev always tries to box, that's what he is.Comment

** Hey, it's Boozo's leetle bro'!Originally posted by BenzeetoRahman will win this fight. Maskaev got old and Rahman has been consistent recently.
Lessee, Rahman 6-1-2, 4 KO the past 3 yrs, and Maskaev 10-0, 8 KO. Yup, Boozo's family logic!Comment

Yea it's pretty fair to assume Maskaev would have went 1-1 with Lennox Lewis, huh Bobby.
Those 10 fights Maskaev had were sure dandy's wernt' they? Did you catch most of them on PPV?
What a ****ing moron you are.

the fact of the matter is that neither of them are top-5, maybe not even top 10 heavyweights, the only reason to pick one over the other is cause you feel the other guy is more washed up.
rahmans right hand and jab are both shadows of what they used to be, as far as im concerned rahman has deteriorated moreso than maskaev who seems to have a breath of fresh life in his career, and has had the brains to reinvent his style.
whoever ends up winning this fight is going to lose the very next one. hell if maskaev wins i wouldnt be surprised if he retired and they give the title right back to rahman for beating up another monte barrett type stumblebum.
olegs 10-0 with 8 KO's has been against much better comp than shannon briggs has faced in his "bum of the month" comeback. whether anyone remembers or not maskaev was a 3-1 dog to lose to sinan samil san and he dominted the fight from start to finish. maskaev also knocked out rugged journeyman julius francis inside of 2 rounds, an honor he shares with vitali klitschko and mike tyson. he also defeated an undeafeated david defiagbon along the way. sam, although nothing special, is better than kali meehan ever was.Comment

Actually, that's not really the reason. I know that's what Rock and his team will tell you, that Rock only lost because he underestimated Maskaev, but if you watch the fight, you'll see Rock knew what he was in with in the very first round, if you watch the power punches fly, and looked to be in very good shape, with a crisp jab.Originally posted by Asian SensationI think people are underestimating Maskaev's chances to win, including Hasim Rahman. In 1999, Maskaev deposited Rahman into Jim Lampleys lap in the Boardwalk Convention Center in AC, NJ. The reason was because Rahman did not properly prepare for Maskaev and was taking the challenge for granted.
Maskaev has been working with Victor Valli Jr., who is a very good trainer. People are expecting Maskaev to come straight in and try to land the right hand, but the reports I'm getting from his camp is that Maskaev has been working on some foot movement and throwing combinations more fluidly.
Rahman may be overlooking Maskaev again, as in subsequent fights Oleg has suffered 3 knockout losses since they first met. If Rahman comes in underprepared again, Maskaev may very well pull off the upset.
What happened is that Maskaev just matched up very well with Rock. They fought almost identically, both jabbing and trying to land hard power shots, from the opening bell. Rock was getting the better of it, but not by much, then Maskaev caught up to him in the 8th and hurt him, Rock couldn't recover and keep Maskaev off, and got KTFO.
But this notion that Rock only lost because he just underestimated Maskaev, is a poor excuse that's repeated way too often by people listening to Rock and his team make excuses. Just like the much-repeated misconception that Rock was totally dominating the fight and got careless and got caught with one lucky punch that KO'd him.
That said, Maskaev will not win the fight. This is the battle of underacheivers, but Rock's younger and better, at this stage. And will have an extra bit of determination that you don't see when he's fighting American HW's with a silent agreement. Watch him fight Al Cole, then watch him fight Kali Meehan. That's going to be roughly the difference in watching him fight Barrett/Toney and watching him fight a 37 yr old Maskaev who he knows can be pushed back with the jab and KO'd with a big right.

I actually thought virutally every round was pretty close, both guys were landing some effective punches, but yeah Maskaev did start taking over in the 7th and 8th. It definitely wasn't any kind of lucky punch scenario. Two real big strong heavyweights trading and throwing alot of punches, you'll get knockouts.Originally posted by boxing2005Well, everybody seems to think that Maskaev got lucky in 1999 when he knocked Rahman out of the ring with one punch.
