OK, I went to the weigh in for Quartey-Forrest, and it went pretty smooth. Everyone made weight, and looked solid. The 5 PM weigh in was somewhat su****ious, a late weigh in usually suggests some of the fighters may have had trouble making weight.
After consulting with Kassim Ouma's manager, he related that Kassim Ouma had been using weights to add some strength to Ouma's frame. It was evident as Ouma looked to be in fantastic shape. Perhaps the strength training may have made it difficult to make the weight. That hypothesis is reinforced by Ouma discussing middleweights Winky Wright and Jermain Taylor as possible future opponents. He told me that Ouma was looking for a big payday, and had Ouma not lost to Karmazin, he would've been fighting Wright this past December. Damn!!!! He then introduced me to Kassim Ouma, who was very nice as well.
If anything that stood out at the weigh in was the Codrington and Carl Daniels weigh in. Daniels, who weighed in at 167 1/2, looked soft around the midsection, as compared with Jaidon Codrington's solid super middleweight physique.
Then I talked to Harold Lederman, who is as nice as they come. We were talking about the Quartey and Ouma fights, and about the how New Jersey boxing scene isn't as good as it was. He's a brilliant boxing mind, he knows his stuff. The highlight was when I was talking to the guy who is gonna do the national anthem tomorrow about the fights, Lederman grabbed my arm and asked me how many rounds the fights were, which was pretty cool. Then he asked me about the fights, I was like "Damn, Lederman wants my opinion?" It was awesome.
I then went up to Sechew Powell and to my surpise he went up to me and told me added my *******. That was pretty ****ing cool, given that I had never met him previously and he recognized me from my pics and the article handouts
I said wassup to Jaidon Codrington and got him to sign my boxing glove that is growing with autographs quickly. Kid Chocolate Peter Quillan was there and so was his trainer.
The highlight of the event was meeting Emmile Griffith. He is the nicest man you could ever meet. He was the first legend I ever met, and I couldn't stop giving him props for all of his extraordinary accomplishments. I asked him if he would come out of retirement to fight Hurricane Carter, and he told me If the Money was right. Hes a funny guy
We were talking about my trainer Jimmy "The Cat" Dupree, who I'm working with to write a book about him. They used to be stablemates in the 60s and 70s.
Over all, it was a very fun event. Too bad Dibella turned down my credential application
**** it, theres always HBO.
