They're all a bunch of clout chasers over at PBC. Benevidez could be a star but they are sidelining him so guys like Plant and Charlo can wait for Canelo.
Come on. Are you serious? A matchmaker is a critical part of picking the right opponents so that a fighter develops as fully as possible. Without getting derailed or looking like sh^t 4 times a year on ESPN.
And a promoter's main job is to promote. Hold press conferences, book fighters to do interviews, and generally draw as much attention as possible.
A boxers personality and how fun he is to watch can contribute to his stardom. But if that was all there was to it guys like Golovkin wouldn't have needed K2 in order to finally make it big.
Damn I hate this new setup. I posted 2 minutes after this post, but never saw it & never got a quote notification about it. My bad on the late reply.
No doubt promoters and matchmakers got jobs. I'm not saying they aren't doing anything to be clear. They play their part, but its a part not the leading role. So I'm merely saying they aren't making or breaking a guy with becoming a star.
GGG was fighting in Germany & Panama before K2 ffs. Who's becoming a star in Panama since boxing began? Duran & thats it I think idk. Its not a long list. And like I've mentioned before a promotion can't make you, but they can sabotage you & from what I recount his promoter before K2 was basically trying to buttfook him to keep Felix Sturm safe or some such sh^t like that as I recall it. I don't remember the specifics but Universum wasn't giving GGG a chance. Once GGG got to the US with K2 no one did anything close to what he did to make him a star. GGG was the fun guy to watch who was gonna KO his opponent & say some crazy sh^t like "this was a very good drama show" in his postfight interview that endured him to the fans watching. GGG did that. K2 didn't do that. And thats the things that made GGG a star in the game who's still making 8 figure paydays for subpar opposition at 38 & past prime off of it.
There are press conferences for damn near every fight on TV. If promotions can make stars why isn't everyone a star? If matchmakers can make stars why doesn't everyone with impressive performances become a star? Stars make themselves. Its insanity to argue otherwise. The IT factor makes a guy a star & promoters & matchmakers have no say or control over that. The boxer who has that IT factor controls it as much as one can & the fans have the say over how high it gets someone.

I don't even see PBC the defacto promoter as the problem per se with sabotaging guys. The problem with PBC is it isn't a promotion despite lots of their haters trying to classify them as such & many like myself even saying they are a defacto promoter cuz...well they are. The problem with PBC is they are first & foremost a management company. They manage boxers. And therefore are looking out for a boxers wants, needs & income. Why? Cuz they get a piece of that income. A happy boxer equals a long & fruitful relationship full of payday after payday. So that means no one at PBC is reallllllllly matchmaking for the biggest fights one can make at PBC. The inmates are running the asylum. From all accounts I've heard the making a fight process works as such. Haymon or your Haymon liason asks you who you wanna fight & also who you think you can beat. From that list they start working on finding an opponent. My assumption is with fights among big time Haymon alum both guys gotta wanna fight each other at the same time & maybe some other variables need to be present as well & likely there has to be a date for that size fight open within a reasonable amount of time. And also PBC keeps this cookie cutter type brand that isn't very good at bringing forth stars. Its sorta like the UFC once they went the uniform route & killed guys getting personal endorsements. It took a lot of the self star making ability out of the UFC & its been harder to create stars since then. Most of the stars the UFC had were pre-this culling of personality. And I think the UFC likes it like that cuz it reduces the amount of cats asking for giant paydays & makes contract talks much easier. Idk if PBC does what it does by design to keep prices down since they are getting a piece of the cut from the fighters whether they make $1M or $20M & obviously $20M gets them a bigger piece so it doesn't make much sense if they were doing it for that reason, but thats a byproduct of how they managing of fighters hurts them with letting stars shine. Sometimes you need a mfer pushing you to bigger fights & I don't see anyone doing that at PBC. Its all about cashing checks at PBC. And lotsa mfers are happy with their current checks there obviously.

All the PBC guys are in a holding pattern right now and their careers are stagnating.
Vergil Ortiz on the other hand just fought and got some buzz going, even potentially getting in the mix with Terence Crawford.
So for sure some entities do a better job at moving fighters than others.

Ok if you really think that why aren't Bud & Loma as big as Oscar, Floyd & Manny. All were promoted by Bob & used those quality TR matchmakers. They always had a good TV deal with one network or a couple for fans to have access to their fights. Why isn't Loma having PPV fight after PPV fight? Why isn't he making 8 digit paydays? Why isn't he on late night talk shows fight week every time he gots a bout coming up? Same questions for Bud? Hell same questions for Oscar Valdez or Artur Beterbiev?

I'm not saying that the individual quality of the fighter doesn't matter. But the promoter matters too.
