Been researching this man recently, studying his record and fights. Very underrated and underappreciated fighter it seems - I never hear his name mentioned. Looks great on film, very skilled. The film quality is not that great so you have to look hard, but it's all there. The feints and shifts, jabbing and combination punching, blocking, parrying, changes in direction. Chocolate, like his fellow Cuban great Kid Gavilan, was a very exciting fighter and a fan favourite in New York, as well as a great character outside the ring. Flashy, intelligent and full of energy.

Chocolate was also Walker Smith Jr's idol.

Okay, this list is going to contain some former "un-ranked" fighters, just so y'all know. This is a list of "favorite" fighters, not necessarily the best. So, without any further adieu, here we go.....

(With the exception of the first one, these are in no particular order....unless the order in which they come to mind counts.)

                1. Muhammad Ali
                2. Mike Tyson......before the "cicus began"
                3. Roberto Duran
                4. Zack Padilla....damn, I miss this guy.
                5. Roy Jones Jr.
                6. Marvin Hagler
                7. Ray Leonard
                8. Bert Cooper
                9. Mike "The Bounty" Hunter
                10. Joe Hipp
                11. Ray Mercer
                12. Tommy Morrison
                13. Bruce Seldon....when he was a prospect
                14. Ray Olivera
                15. Tony Tubbs....boring sometimes; but he could box your ears off when he was on....boy was slick.
                16. Rid**** Bowe....before he broke my heart, so to speak.
                17. Evander Holyfield
                18. Marco Antonio Barrera
                19. Kevin Kelley
                20. Junior "Poison" Jones
                21. Kennedy McKinney
                22. James Toney.....as a middleweight and super-middleweight (still love his personality; but damn he's fat)
                23. Livingstone Ras-I Bramble
                24. Lamon Brewster
                25. "Prince" Charles Williams
                26. Merqui Sosa
                27. Thomas Hearns......should have mentioned him much sooner.
                28. Maurice "Mo Better" Harris
                29. Derrick Jefferson....hated that he didn't pan out.
                30. Earnie Shavers.....how can you not love "Mr. Destruction"?
                31. Larry Holmes

That's all for now; but, trust me....there are many more.

A really good New York prospect named Peter Quillin uses that monicker now. This is him:
