    Boxers Who Died Young

This thread will serve several purposes, not the least of which is to pay tribute to the valiant warriors who have entertained us throughout the many decades of this sport. For the purposes of this thread, I define “young” as less than sixty years of age. I will start with boxers who died in the ring, or as a result of their injuries from a single boxing match, and will list the age and the opponent. This list is not exhaustive, as it’s estimated that approximately 500 boxers have died as a result of ring injuries since the Marquess of Queensbury rules were introduced in 1884. I will therefore limit the names to the more well-known incidences, or where a world champion was involved. My sincere apologies to the men whose names I leave out, as they deserve to be no less honored than those I mention. If anyone cares to add any names to the list, or anything else, please be my guest.

An excerpt from Wikipedia: “Buddy McGirt (trainer) asked the referee to stop the contest at the end of the eleventh round. Dadashev, losing significantly on the official scorecards, protested; but McGirt overruled him, believing that he could not take any more punishment. McGirt later said he had considered doing so two rounds earlier, as he felt his fighter was fading and taking too many hits.”

All of these are sad stories, but sadder still to wonder if Maxim would still be here if Buddy waved the fight off earlier.

Lol Let’s hope it remains a figurative death.

An unusual situation in the case of Frankie Campbell. He was battered by Max Baer, one of the hardest hitting heavyweights of all time (and who himself died young). Doctors worked on Frankie in the ring and at the hospital, for what amounted to several hours, and it was later discovered that his brain had been knocked completely loose from the connective tissue inside his skull. The ref was subsequently suspended for not stopping the fight on time.

That was a tough one to miss. Lol But I’m sure I’ve missed a few that died before the age of sixty. Sadly, I couldn’t pay tribute to all who lost their lives in the ring.

It’s a dangerous sport. Like they say, you don’t “play” boxing.
