Did a quick lazy google, Snopes is highly skeptical. That sounds Mr. Rogers as hell, but then again there was that one debunked myth that he was a former navy seal who, after seeing too much bloodshed, vowed to devote the rest of his life to spreading warmth and cheer, etc. Only thing that gives me pause, but I'd love it to be true, because, hilarious.
There were myths around Mr. Rogers that other people started. Not hard to find video of Mr. Rogers himself talking about the incident though. And if you think Mr. Rogers was a liar then you have trust issues ha.
